Art History
Tyler School of Art offers the Master of Arts and Doctor of
Philosophy degrees in Art History. The M.A. program is intended to provide breadth
and thoroughness in the study of art history, either as preparation for future graduate
study or as the foundation for careers in related areas such as museums and galleries.
The Ph.D. program is intended to prepare students for college teaching or for other
research-oriented occupations. The curriculum includes Western art history, Aegean,
Greek and Roman art; Indian and Southeast Asian art and architecture; Medieval art and
architecture; Renaissance and Baroque painting, sculpture and architecture; and the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The Master of Arts program requires 30 credits including at
least one directed research course. Students pursuing the M.A. must write a thesis.
Students have three years to finish work for the degree. The M.A. in Fine Arts
Administration requires 36 credits. Fifteen credits are taken in the Department of
Art History, and an additional 12 credits in the Richard J. Fox School of Business and
Management. The fine arts administration students must complete an approved
internship. The Ph.D. program in Art history requires 60 graduate-level credits.
A qualifying examination and a dissertation are required for the doctoral degree.
The program is expected to be completed in seven years (without the M.A.).
All Art History programs are offered on the Main campus.
