Psychology
The Department of Psychology in the College of Liberal Arts
offers the Ph.D. degree. There are five training programs within this degree
program. the Clinical program is rooted in the scientist-practitioner philosophy
(Boulder Model). It is designed to expose students to a wide variety of research and
clinical experiences and to emphasize the mutually supportive interplay of clinical
research and practice. The Cognitive program prepares students for careers in
research and teaching in a variety of academic and applied settings. Training
includes the areas of memory, perception, thinking, reasoning, spatial cognition,
psycholinguistics, creativity, neurocognition, and cognitive development. The
Developmental program prepares students for careers in research and teaching in a variety
of academic and applied settings. Training occurs in all phases of the life cycle;
from infancy through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and aging. Training includes
the areas of biological/neurological, cognitive, socio-cultural, and emotional dimensions
of development. The Experimental program trains students for careers in research and
teaching in a variety of academic and applied settings. Training includes the areas
of evolutionary psychology, behavioral neuroscience, perception, and behavior analysis and
problems as diverse as addiction, aggression, empathy, nonverbal communication, secondary
reinforcement, and perception of movement. The Social & Organizational program
prepares students for research careers in academic, industrial, and government settings.
Training emphasizes the development of a broad base of theory, research skills and
problem-solving applications from a strong theoretical and technical foundation in social
and organizational psychology, quantitative and qualitative research methodology, and data
analysis skills.
The Psychology Ph.D. normally consists of 72 hours of
course-practicum work taken over 4-5 years. The Clinical program requires a one year
internship and is approved by the American Psychological Association. All classes
are offered on the Main campus.
