The department’s goal is to assist students to achieve academic, career, personal, social, and cultural growth that are essential to the development of an educated productive person. The staff is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals who address the student and institutional issues that will facilitate an environment for learning and personal growth. Services are confidential and free of charge to Temple University students. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The staff provides on-site services also at Ambler and Tyler by appointment. The five components of the department are listed below. Psychological Services Psychological Services helps students achieve a satisfying growth experience during and after college. The department is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of counseling and clinical psychologists engaged largely in individual, couples, and small group counseling. Special focus groups and workshops are offered each semester, in such areas as stress management, interpersonal relations, eating disorders, assertiveness, and handling emotions such as anger and fear. Conflict Education Resource Team (CERT) Psychological Services also supervises the Conflict Education Resource Team (CERT), which uses trained peer educators to provide mediation and conflict coaching to assist in the resolution of conflicts. The peer educators also facilitate educational workshops regarding the nature and value of conflict. Psychiatric Services Psychiatric Services is committed to caring for the mental health needs of Temple University students. The psychiatrist performs evaluations and offers short term individual psychotherapy, as well as medication evaluation and management. Some of the more common reasons for consulting with the psychiatric services are anxiety, depression, academic stress, and problems with interpersonal relationships. When the evaluation indicates that short term psychotherapy is insufficient, a judicious referral is made. Students are seen by appointment except in emergency situations where immediate care is required. Sexual Assault Counseling and Education
(SACE) Recognizing that college students are particularly at risk for sexual assault, the SACE program plays a pivotal role in changing attitudes and myths about sexual violence through education and training within the University community. In addition, the program provides resources for training, participation in curriculum development, and assistance in coordinating University services for survivors of sexual assault. The SACE staff provide crisis intervention, victim/survivor advocacy, short term individual therapy, and survivor groups. SACE also utilizes peer counselors who provide student support and training. The SACE coordinator serves as a sexual harassment ombudsperson. All services are strictly confidential. Drug and Alcohol Referral and Education (DARE) The Drug and Alcohol Referral and Education (DARE) Program is a comprehensive program focusing on all aspects of alcohol and other drug use and abuse. DARE offers individual and group counseling and education. The DARE program also provides peer counseling education and referral with a core of trained students working in conjunction with certified addiction counselors. Each year, special workshops are sponsored on alcohol and other drug related issues. These workshops emphasize positive decision-making and alternatives to drug and alcohol use. Several 12-step groups including AA, CA and NA, ADA, ACOA meet regularly on Temple’s campus. Please call 215-204-7276 for more information on any of the above programs. In addition to its facility on the Main Campus, the Student Health Services maintains outpatient offices at the Health Sciences, Ambler, and Tyler campuses. All Student Health Services sites administer immunization and allergy injections, and have a self-care wound and cold center. Routine gynecological services including family planning services are available. A clinical laboratory and dermatology consultation are available on main campus. Most provided services are free of charge to Temple University students. There are charges, however, for injections, certain procedures and elective physical examinations, family planning services, laboratory tests, medications, and medical supplies used to treat musculoskeletal injuries. Students are also responsible for medical fees incurred elsewhere, including any charges made by Temple University Hospital. Immunizations It is recommended that all Temple students prior to attendance update their immunizations to measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, and polio. This will protect each student from epidemics of measles, mumps, and rubella on college campuses. Since the incidence of tuberculosis is increasing in the U.S., a tuberculin skin test is recommended prior to attendance. Immunization and tuberculin skin testing are required in some of Temple’s schools and colleges.
