Application Packet

Applicants to the graduate program should contact the Tyler School of Art directly for the application packet. Applicants to Tyler's M.F.A. programs should indicate one of the following as an intended major, so they may be sent the appropriate application materials: Ceramics and Glass, Fibers and Fabric Design, Jewelry/Metals, Photography, Printmaking, Visual Design, Painting, or Sculpture.

All applicants to any of the M.F.A. programs are required to submit the following materials:

  • Temple University Graduate Application.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Typed statement of the applicant's philosophy and goals as an artist.
  • $40.00 nonrefundable application fee (in U.S. dollars) in the form of a check or money order made payable to Temple University.
  • Portfolio consisting of 20 35-mm color slides representative of the immediate direction of the applicant's work. Slides must each be labeled with the applicant's name and "top" indicated. The slide portfolio should be submitted in the standard box in which it is returned from the photo-processor. Original work will not be accepted. Slide carousels are not acceptable and will not be returned.
  • A self-addressed envelope for the return of the slide portfolio with a check or money order (separate from the application fee) made payable to Temple University in the amount of $3.00 for postage and handling.

Degree Requirements

The M.F.A. student must satisfactorily complete 60 semester hours of graduate study. Requirements include course work in major and elective studios and seminars, Interdisciplinary Seminar and Art History. Graduate students may not enroll in courses taught by other graduate students.

Each student is evaluated upon the completion of 15 semester hours. Students who do not pass this review are either dropped from the program or required to undergo a second review at a later date. Those not passing the second review are dropped from the program. The review committee consists of a minimum of four members: two graduate faculty within the area of concentration, and two graduate faculty from outside the area of concentration. The graduate adviser serves as the chair of the committee. Satisfactory completion of 45 and 60 semester-hour reviews is also required.

The committees must meet as a group for the reviews. A 15-credit hour M.F.A. review week schedule prepared in advance will facilitate faculty and student availability for meetings. It is intended that the committee stay intact for the duration of the student's studies wherever possible. The committee shall be comprised of Graduate Faculty. The Chair of the Committee is customarily the student's adviser from the area major. The Chair has the voting power to break a tie vote. The committee will vote pass/fail.

The committee shall be comprised of two faculty from the student's area, two faculty from outside the student's area, with a minimum committee of four members, no maximum. The two required outside committee members will be selected by the student in consultation with his/her adviser. Any additional committee members, above the required four, will be chosen at the discretion of the student. If any area has less than two graduate faculty, a second member will be selected from the department.

The purpose of the 15-credit hour review is to appraise or assess a student's work at the end of 15 credit hours in order to recommend matriculation status for the student.

At the 45 credit hour review, the committee must meet and vote to establish the student's readiness for the M.F.A. thesis exhibition.

An approved thesis exhibition, written statement, and slide portfolio are required at the final review to meet M.F.A. requirements.

Required Course -M.F.A.

400. Interdisciplinary Seminar. (3 s.h.)

This course will facilitate a cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary awareness among the graduate students, encouraging awareness of their peers in other departments as well as accelerating their knowledge of Tyler/Temple programs and opportunities. The course will also introduce the students to the Philadelphia arts community and its institutions via guest speakers and field trips. Required course for all M.F.A. graduate students.

Graduate Faculty

Jon Clark, Professor of Ceramics/Glass, M.F.A., Royal College of Art; Nicholas Kripal, Professor of Ceramics, M.F.A., Southern Illinois University; Stanley Lechtzin, Professor of Metal Design, M.F.A., Cranbrook Academy of Art; Rebecca Medel, Assistant Professor of Fibers, M.F.A., University of California, Los Angeles; Vickie Sedman, Professor of Metal Design, M.F.A., University of Wisconsin; Robert Winokur, Professor of Ceramics, New York State College of Ceramics.

Ceramics and Glass

The graduate program in Ceramics and Glass is a two year, 60-credit hour program leading to the Master of Fine Arts Degree. The program usually accommodates four to six people studying ceramics and two to four people in glass.

The working space in the clay studio, aside from the kiln room and storage area, is approximately 5,000 square feet with space for individual graduate studios.

Tyler's Ceramics and Glass program is nationally and internationally respected for the high quality of both its graduates and faculty.

Fibers and Fabric Design

The graduate Fiber and Fabric Design program is a two-year, 60-credit course of study. Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply from both the areas of traditional textile study: surface design and embellishment, weaving, off-loom, and from non-traditional areas where personal work may have some basis in fiber materials or techniques. The program seeks to expand skills and to have the student develop a focus that is conceptually based.

Graduate fiber and fabric design students have full access to the entire fiber studio including the dye room, print room, and the loom and off-loom areas. In addition, each student has an individual studio in an eight hundred square foot separate graduate studio space. The program has studio space for four graduate students. Generally, two students are in the first year of the program and two students are in the second year.

The fiber area has nationally and internationally recognized graduate alumni and faculty. In addition, the program has yearly visiting artists who present slide lectures and give critiques to each graduate student.
