Women's Studies
Certificate Program

Increasingly, the latter option has begun to dominate the Women’s Studies discourse. Interdisciplinary has been defined as central to the production of knowledge in the field of Women’s Studies. Graduate studies in Women’s Studies requires grounding in Women’s Studies and at least one, and often two, other disciplinary frameworks. Scholars in the field of Women’s Studies recognize the necessity to focus their work on gender in a traditional discipline, but also require a familiarity with work on women and gender in other disciplines to enrich their own understandings.

It is for this philosophical reason that the Women’s Studies Program offers a graduate certificate rather than a degree in Women’s Studies. The certificate is designed to ensure interdisciplinary study through requiring graduate courses in at least two programs or departments. Thus students working toward graduate degrees in other disciplines whose work is focused on gender will be able to study the central concepts of feminist theory and analysis through Women’s Studies graduate courses and therefore ask better questions in their own discipline.

Areas of Study

The certificate program can be taken in conjunction with a wide variety of disciplines. Work on gender is actively encouraged in many departments around the university. Particular strengths include U.S. and British women’s social history and literature; the intersection of gender and race; feminist theory and ethics; women and health; women and work.

Application Deadlines

The deadline for completed application and supporting materials for the joint program is April 1 for fall and November 1 for spring. Acceptances to the free-standing program are made all year round.

Financial Aid

Limited financial aid is available in the form of undergraduate teaching opportunities. Application should be made to the Women’s Studies Program.

Admission Requirements

  • A completed application form, which may be obtained from the Women's Studies Program, 811 Anderson Hall, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 19122;
  • An official transcript of all previous college work, including Temple University. Applicants should have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 (on a four point scale);
  • Two letters of recommendation from persons in a position to evaluate the academic ability and accomplishments of the applicant; and
  • A personal statement indicating interests, plans and objectives within the field of Women's Studies.

Note: If the certificate is to be obtained in conjunction with a Master’s or Doctoral degree in cooperating departments, students already admitted to a cooperating Temple University graduate program will be accepted to the Women’s Studies Certificate Program on the basis of an application and submission of graduate transcripts.

Requirements

Students must complete 12 semester hours of course work: Women’s Studies 400 Introduction to Feminist Studies (3 s.h.); gender studies course or practicum from any cooperating department, either the student’s own, or another (6 s.h.); Women’s Studies 500 Seminar in Feminist Research (1 s.h. for three semesters).

A research project is required. Students working toward a Temple graduate degree may satisfy this requirement by focusing on women or gender in their final project, thesis or dissertation research for that degree or by doing a research paper in the interdisciplinary research seminar. Students in the free-standing certificate program will do the equivalent of a graduate research paper in the interdisciplinary research seminar or by arrangement with a member of the Women’s Studies Affiliated Faculty.

All students will be assigned an adviser from the Women’s Studies Affiliated Faculty who will monitor their progress through the program.
