Course Numbering System

All undergraduate course numbers were changed, effective first Summer Session 2007.  The old course numbers appear throughout this publication in parentheses, unless otherwise noted.  For more details on course renumbering, go to the Course Renumbering web site at http://renumbering.temple.edu. The "Course Menu" option on the Course Renumbering web site provides a searchable database of courses with their old and new numbers.

The new course numbers follow specific guidelines:

07xx: Preparatory courses.

08xx: General Education courses.

09xx: Honors General Education courses.

1xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their first year of study.

2xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their second year of study.

3xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their third year of study.

4xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their fourth year of study.

5xxx: Courses primarily for graduate students; however, undergraduate students in their third or fourth year may enroll in such courses with permission.

Honors courses have a “9” as the second digit (x9xx) and their titles contain the word “Honors.”

Writing Intensive courses end in “96,” “97” and “98.”

General Education (GenEd) courses are numbered 08xx; the GenEd Honors courses are numbered 09xx. GenEd courses are also identified by the Required Course Identifier (RCI). GenEd courses can be found by selecting the View General Education Courses Only option in the Course Schedule at www.temple.edu/tucourses.

Core courses are identified by their RCI.  Core courses can also be found by selecting the "Core Requirements" option in the Course Schedule at www.temple.edu/tucourses.

University General Education (GenEd) Curriculum

Note: Transfer students admitted prior to Fall 2010 follow the Core Curriculum requirements.

If you are a new freshman in the Fall 2008 or after, you will be taking courses in a new program called General Education, or GenEd.

Temple faculty and administration have been at work for years on this new program, and here's why -- as the 21st century advances, the amount of information available to us and the speed with which we can access information continues to expand at a stunning pace. We exist in a virtual storm of information. GenEd is a response to this reality: it redefines what it means to be an educated person. In a world where no one can hope to know it all, the best way to prepare for the future is to learn how information is linked and how pieces of information are interrelated. GenEd is about making connections.

In our GenEd classes we draw connections between academic knowledge and current controversies. Whether it's understanding digital mapping, the causes of poverty in Philadelphia or global climate change, GenEd classes will involve cutting edge issues.

Many GenEd courses make connections between the classroom, the city of Philadelphia and the greater Philadelphia region. Temple is embedded in a dynamic urban environment, providing a fascinating context for learning. An art course will take you to museums, dance performances and to historic buildings to see battle re-enactments. An education course will make you an active participant in local schools and community centers. An environmental science course will take you to a 19th century sewage treatment plant now restored as The Waterworks. In these and many other ways, GenEd will mix your coursework with more vibrant experience of the city and the region, ultimately giving you a sense of Philadelphia's connections to the world.

GenEd courses also feature connections across different academic disciplines. Study Shakespeare through literature, dance and music. Look at film from the perspectives of race, gender and ethnicity. Learn about sustainable design by blending geology, landscape architecture and moral philosophy. GenEd courses encourage you to develop the ability to view complex problems through multiple lenses.

The GenEd curriculum transformation has attracted many of Temple's finest faculty with a deep investment in developing and refining dozens of innovative courses. They are committed to teaching them, and to making GenEd an outstanding learning experience.

The GenEd curriculum introduces you to nine areas of learning and a total of eleven courses. The tables below demonstrate the areas and the total number of courses required in each area.

University Core Curriculum

Note: Freshman admitted in Fall 2008 and after follow the GenEd requirements.

All current undergraduate students (admitted prior to Fall 2008) and new transfer students admitted in the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010* academic years will complete a version of the Core Curriculum:

  • If students have fewer than 45 credits in transfer, they will complete the full Core Curriculum (see below) using Core or GenEd courses taken at Temple or the equivalent transfer courses, with the exception of two Writing Intensive courses, which must be taken at Temple;
  • If students have 45 or more credits in transfer, they will complete the 45+ Core Curriculum using Core or GenEd courses taken at Temple or the equivalent transfer courses, with the exception of two Writing Intensive courses, which must be taken at Temple;
  • If students have completed an approved Associate's degree from a Core-to-Core partner institution, their Core Curriculum is complete with the exception of two Writing Intensive courses, which must be taken at Temple. A listing of current Core-to-Core agreements can be viewed at www.temple.edu/vpus/ucc/core_transfers.htm.

*Transfer students admitted to Temple in Fall 2010 and after follow the GenEd program.

Eliminated Core Courses

The Core courses listed below are no longer offered at Temple University (excluding the Japan campus). Core students can use GenEd replacement courses to satisfy the corresponding Core area.

If you previously completed one of these Core courses and would like to replace the grade, you will need to take the designated GenEd substitute. The repeat course may not be used to satisfy multiple areas of Core.

Students who have earned credit for one or more of the Core courses listed below can not earn additional credit for the corresponding GenEd course (with the exception of Mosaic and GenEd Math courses). For example, if a student has successfully completed SOC 1376 (R059), s/he can not earn additional credit for any of the following: AF-AM S 0829, ANTHRO 0829, GUS 0829, History 0829, POL SCI 0829, or SOC 0829.

NOTE:

GenEd courses cannot be used to satisfy multiple Core areas; GenEd courses cannot be used to satisfy Core Writing Intensive requirements. Consult your advisor for details to develop a revised plan for meeting Core requirements.

All 0900 level courses are part of the Honors program; students must be in Temple's Honors program to register for those courses.

Information in the table does NOT apply to freshmen, who must use General Education courses to fulfill their General Education requirements.

For details about the eliminated Core courses and their GenEd substitutes, please go to the Core Update web site at www.temple.edu/vpus/ucc/core_update.htm and click on "Eliminated Core Courses."
