Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society, was founded on December 5, 1776, at the College of William and Mary. Since then, Phi Beta Kappa has evolved to become the nation's leading advocate for the liberal arts and sciences at the undergraduate level. Temple University's chapter was founded in 1974.
Phi Beta Kappa is an honor society open to juniors and seniors in the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Science and Technology, and Art History majors. To qualify for Phi Beta Kappa, a student must maintain a high grade point average in a broad, rigorous program of study in the liberal arts, including mathematics and foreign language.
