5001. Managing Information
Systems (3 s.h.)
This course provides an introduction to the effective use of information systems. The management of IT and information systems is addressed by considering contemporary issues faced by managers related to the linkage between systems initiatives and the businesses they support. The course focuses on the technical and managerial foundations required to make good management decisions and successfully manage information systems.
5101. Database Management
and Warehousing (3 s.h.)
Prerequisite: MIS 5001.
The goal of the course is to understand the use, management, and design of database management systems. Topics covered include data modeling, database design, structured query language, warehousing, and data administration using a modern database management tool.
5102. Business Systems Analysis (3 s.h.)
Prerequisite: MIS 5001.
The goal of the course is to understand the core issues of business information and systems analysis, design, and development. The course includes traditional analysis and data modeling methods as well as modern approaches such as object-oriented modeling, unified modeling language, prototyping, software patterns, and issues involved in analyzing enterprise systems and electronic commerce sites.
5103. Network Architectures for Business (3 s.h.)
Prerequisite: MIS 5001.
This course covers the information architecture of the internet-enabled organization, including the use and development of client server and distributed systems. It provides detailed analysis of networking and telecommunications, including data, voice, image, video, network hardware, and topology. Concepts, models, architectures, and standards for the design, implementation, integration, security, and management of distributed internet- and intranet-enabled systems and networks are discussed. The course provides an understanding of the role of the information architecture and distributed systems on organizational design and management strategy.
5108. Information Technology Strategy, Policy, and Management (3 s.h.)
Prerequisite: MIS 5001.
This course takes a case-study approach to understanding the strategic, policy, and control elements of managing new and existing information systems, as well as IT infrastructure and operations.
5112. Design & Innovation in an i-Pod World (3 s.h.)
Prerequisite: MIS 5001.
As we move into the digital economy, the ways by which companies create value is fundamentally shifting from products to experiences. As demonstrated by the phenomenal success of Apple Computer's iPod, rapid convergence to digital technology opens up new opportunities to offer novel products and services that did not exist before. Consequently, the traditional boundaries across firms are rapidly redrawn in order to exploit unique innovation opportunities. In this course, students learn theories and practices for innovation, tools and methods for design inquiry, and characteristics of "design attitude." The course emphasizes hands-on project and studio-style project works.

Prerequisite: MIS 5001 and approval of the department.
This course offers study in particular aspects of management information systems under the direct supervision of a graduate faculty member. No more than six semester hours of independent study may be counted toward degree requirements.

This course deepens the student's understanding of the impact of information technology on business practice and strategy. Students examine IT resources, development, and strategy and develop an enterprise-wide perspective on the interrelationships among business strategy, organizational structure, information technology strategy, and information systems platforms.
5882. Independent Study (3 s.h.)
Prerequisite: MIS 5001 and approval of the department. Limited to students matriculated in the Executive MBA program.

5901. Capstone in Information
Technology (3 s.h.)
Prerequisite: Open only to M.S. in MIS students who must have completed all four core courses and two electives.
For this capstone experience, students select a topic in their area of interest and write a research paper or implement an information system.
