Admission Requirements and Deadlines
Application Deadline:

Fall: June 1 (U.S. credentials) / March 15 (international credentials)

Completed applications are processed throughout the year as they are received. International students who miss the deadline are required to submit to Temple University an evaluation of their transcript by an approved educational evaluation firm.

Letters of Reference:

Number Required: 2

From Whom: Recommendations should be professional references from supervisors and co-workers or academic references. References should be obtained from those who know the candidate well and who can attest to the candidate's ability to excel in the MSFE program.

Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:

A strong record of achievement in quantitative coursework, including Multivariate Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Advanced Statistics and Probability, is required. Prior or anticipated exposure to Finance and Computer Programming is also required.

Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:

A baccalaureate degree is required.

Statement of Goals:

An essay on your Professional Plans and Goals is required. This statement should be 1 to 3 pages in length and reflect your influences, values, and aspirations and interest in the MSFE program. You may choose to include:

  • What particular past experiences or previous exposure (academic, professional, etc.) prepared or motivated you to pursue an MSFE degree?
  • How do you expect to change over the course of the program?
  • What personal and professional values and skills do you hope to acquire beyond the academic content?
  • How would admission to the MSFE Program support your career objectives or potential career path(s)?
  • Given the importance of teamwork and collaboration in business, what are the most significant strengths or contributions you bring to a team?
Standardized Test Scores:

The GMAT/GRE is required. The average GMAT score for the past several years has been approaching 650.

Minimum TOEFL score needed to be accepted: 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, or 79 internet-based.

Resume:

A resume is required.

Transfer Credit:

Transfer credit is not accepted for the MSFE Program.

About the Program

Financial engineering is an interdisciplinary program in the Fox School of Business and Management. The MSFE curriculum combines studies in financial theory, mathematical modeling, computational methods, and global markets.

Time Limit for Degree Completion: 2 years

Campus Location:

Center City, Fort Washington

Required business core courses are offered at the Center City and Fort Washington campuses through a rotation cycle.  A selection of upper-level courses is offered at the Center City and Fort Washington campuses each semester. Courses may also be offered online.

Full-Time/Part-Time Status:

Students are required to complete the degree program through classes offered after 4:30 p.m. Students are able to complete the degree program on a part-time basis (8 credit hours or less per semester).

Research is supported by the Fox School of Business and Management's eBusiness Institute, the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the Institute of Global Management Studies, the Institute for Healthcare Management, the Center for e-Marketing, the Ethics Resource Center, the Safeguard Scientifics Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Financial Services, and the Small Business Development Center. Research interests of the Fox School faculty are also supported by numerous centers and institutes throughout Temple University. The Finance Department faculty conducts research in Acquisitions Dividend Policy, Asset-based Back Securities, Corporate Governance, Corporate Restructuring, Portfolio Theory, and Real Estate Analysis.

Non-Degree Student Policy:

Students with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above may take classes on a non-matriculated status. Non-matriculated students can take a maximum of nine credit hours. Any additional courses require the student to be matriculated in a program.

Financing Opportunities

Assistantships, when available, include teaching and supervised research and require 20 hours of service per week. An Assistantship provides a stipend and tuition sholarship.
