Applying for a Social Security Number
You must go to the Social Security Administration to apply for the Social Security Number. You are not eligible to apply for a Social Security Number unless you have employment in the United States.
You should wait until you have been in the United States for at least 10 days before you apply for a Social Security number.
Once you receive your Social Security Card (approximately 2-6 weeks via mail) UPDATE the following:
A Social Security Number will only be granted if it is needed for employment purposes. There are no exceptions to the U.S. government policy.

Instructions for Applying
For F-1 and J-1 students:
- Make sure you are registered for classes before applying for the social security number
- Please have your employer issue you the Social Security letter you will need to bring with you when you apply for the Social Security Number. Please have your employer use the following template for the Social Security letter: Applying for a Social Security Number (F and J students only).
- After your employer has provided you the completed Social Security letter, please have the letter signed by an advisor (D.S.O.) from the ISSS office. You will need to bring the following documents with you when you go to the Social Security Administration to apply: Most recent I-20/DS-2019, I-94 (you can find this online: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/consent.html), valid passport, F-1 or J-1 visa, and the signed Social Security letter.
