Temple University Recruits for Graduate Certificate in Disability Studies
Temple University's College of Education is currently recruiting students interested in pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Disability Studies to begin August 2015. The Disability Studies Graduate Certificate online program was developed and is implemented through the expertise and collaborative efforts of the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University and faculty both within the College of Education and representing multiple academic disciplines.
The Disability Studies Graduate Certificate program includes a series of three online courses and an individualized field experience designed to be taken over the period of one calendar year. Course work focuses on exposure to and study of disability from multiple perspectives including social, cultural, historical and contemporary frameworks.
Temple's program offers students an opportunity for broader community engagement through partnerships with statewide advocacy groups, including Pennsylvania's Developmental Disabilities Council, Centers for Independent Living, the Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania as well as service providers, policy makers, representatives of the criminal justice system and other universities in Pennsylvania.
In this program, students explore their own perspectives on disability as they learn from experts in the field, those who have family members with disabilities, and people with disabilities. They will emerge from the program with an enriched understanding of disability culture and how each of us can become change agents focused on increasing equitable, fair, and accessible possibilities for people with disabilities through our individual interactions and relationships, within our work places, and our communities.
