Training on Personal Emergency Preparedness Skills

The Institute on Disabilities is hosting two, free, in-person training sessions entitled "Youth Power: Building Skills for Personal Emergency Preparedness."

Philadelphia or Montgomery County

Each training, one held in Philadelphia and one in Montgomery County, will accommodate up to 25 participants and will promote personal preparedness of transitioning youth with disabilities, ages 15 to 21, and their families for disasters and emergencies.

- Monday, April 13, 2015 4 PM - 6:30 PM at the Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center. 50 Eagleville Road, Eagleville, PA 19403

- Saturday, June 6, 10 AM - 12:30 PM at Temple University's Main Campus, Student Center, 1755 N. 13th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122

What the Training Covers

This unique training will provide an overview of personal emergency preparedness topics including:

- self-advocacy for requesting reasonable accommodations in emergency shelters

- sheltering in place and evacuation for youth with disabilities who use assistive technology (AT) and durable medical equipment

- how to make a personal evacuation go-kit

- resources for emergency notification

Free Emergency Kit and More

Each attendee will receive an emergency kit backpack (also know as a "go bag" or "emergency kit"), as well as a shopping list to help guide them in gathering supplies for their personalized emergency kit. Attendees will also receive a copy of "My Emergency Readiness Plan-PA" and instruction on how to prepare themselves and the rest of their family for an emergency.
