PROGRAM INFORMATION

Mass Media and Communication , PHD

The Ph.D. in Mass Media and Communication (MM&C) offers a comprehensive curriculum built on a broadly conceived foundation of communication theory and research methods. The curriculum is developed around introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses largely oriented toward two basic areas of study. A member of the MM&C faculty mentors each Ph.D. student through an individualized course of study in one or a combination of areas of research and scholarship. There are typically opportunities for the interested doctoral student to participate in research and publication projects with individual faculty members.

Main Campus

All program course offerings are taught only at Main Campus.

Students are able to complete the degree program through classes offered after 4:30 p.m. Students able to complete the degree program on a part-time basis (8 credit hours or less per semester).

Areas of Specialization:
Faculty members offer substantantial coursework in the following areas: Institutions - examination of the legal, economic and policy-making issues surrounding the media in national and international contexts. Social processes - theory and method pertaining to media message systems in connection with psychological, social and cultural patterns. International, interpersonal, organizational and management communications are also included in the curriculum.

Job Placement:
Many MM&C Ph.D. recipients work as professors in colleges and universities around the world, while others hold a variety of positions in communication and other commercial industries as well as non-profit organizations.

Students may include in their curriculum a limited amount of production coursework in audio, video, film and/or journalism.

Study Abroad:
MM&C doctoral students often take advantage of of Temple's London Program. The program offers a unique opportunity to study British media. Other international study opportunities include programs in Rome and Japan.

Non-degree Student Policy:
