16 credits required as follows: 3 credits in Computer Synthesis, 3 credits in Seminar in Theoretical Analysis (Music Studies 508, Schenker, 2 credits in Canon and Fugue (Music Studies 514), 2 credits in Composition (Music Studies 548), 3 credits in Research in Music (Music Studies 700), 3 credits in Seminar in Stylistic Analysis (Music Studies 509-513); 14 credits of electives both in and outside of Theory (seminars in Stylistic Analysis are recommended, as is Pedagogy of Theory 550); 1 credit of Final Written Project (Music Studies 798). Where courses are not offered as regularly as once every two years, substitutions may be made with the consent of the adviser and Associate Dean.

Comprehensive Exam Description - Upon the imminent completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate study and with the approval of the major adviser, the candidate may request permission of the Associate Dean of the Boyer College of Music to take the written qualifying examination. This request must be made in writing at least one month before the scheduled date of the examination. If s/he wishes to do so, the candidate may take this examination during the final semester of graduate study. The master’s qualifying examinations will be given once each term.Comprehensive Exam Subject - Music Theory majors take a three-hour written examination in the major field.Comprehensive Exam Complete - Upon the imminent completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate study and with the approval of the major adviser.Comprehensive Exam Grade - At least two faculty members grade the written Comprehensive Examination.Comprehensive Exam Schedule - Students should contact the Associate Dean at least one month prior to the requested administration date.Thesis
Thesis 1 - Music Theory majors write a final written project (not a thesis) of 50-75 pages. The project must meet profession standards of research and writing, encouraging students to develop skills in research, writing, and analysis. Additionally, the final written project provides a vehicle needed for those interested in applying for doctoral studies in music theory or music history.Thesis 2 - There is no defense of the final written projectThesis 3 - The major advisor evaluates and grades the final written project.Other Culminating Events
Event Description - All candidates for the Master of Music degree are required to take a one-hour comprehensive examination in music literature and theory. A listening exam of l00 musical works of the standard literature from the Middle Ages through the 20th century is available to the student when admitted to the College. It is suggested that this examination be taken in the penultimate term of study. The list is intended as an aid to preparation for the examination. The examination is in three parts: identification of specific selections from a list of 100 works, identification of a "mystery" selection, and score analysis.Event Philosophy - Students should plan to take the examination in the penultimate semester of study. The examination is administered approximately ten times each year. Students notify the music graduate secretary no later than one week prior to the requested examination administration date. Two graduate faculty members grade the examination. Students must pass all three sections. A score of 70% or better must be achieved in the identification section, and a "pass" or "weak pass" must be achieved in the "mystery" selection and the score analysis section.
