Journalism, MJ

(Concentration: Journalism/Religion)

Courses are available at Center City and Harrisburg, but a complete program is not offered on either of those sites.

Full-time/Part-time Status
Students are able to complete the degree program through classes offered after 4:30 p.m.

JPRA 410 News Reporting; JPRA 411 News Editing; JPRA 621 Communication History; JPRA 622 Communication Law; JPRA 433 Nonfiction Writing (with religious component); One elective from the journalism graduate curriculum, such as a course in broadcasting,advertising or public relations. JPRA 411 Public Affairs Reporting; JPRA 421 Nonfiction Writing; JPRA 432 The American Magazine; JPRA 511 Advertising and Public Relations Research; JPRA 585 Media Management and two proseminars in Chritianity, Islam or Judaism, proseminar in an Eastern religion; proseminar in religion and the social sciences; research course in contemporary American religion; two-day seminar in New York City with religion communicators.

Culminating Exam

  • Comprehensive Exam Description - The purpose of the comprehensive examination is to demonstrate competence in three ares of study in the Master of Journalism Program. Students request three major professors to submit three separate questions for exam. The student has a week to complete exam.
  • Comprehensive Exam Subject - Students must take Communication Law or Communication History as one area of exam, but may choose two other areas from subjects studied.
  • Comprehensive Exam Complete - Students take the examination during or after the last semester of work.
  • Comprehensive Exam Write - The Graduate Faculty in the Master of Journalism participate, according to choice of student and MJ Director.
  • Comprehensive Exam Grade - The Graduate Faculty members who write the questions also evaluate the answers. Each examination is evaluated by two faculty members, each voting to pass or fail the student. If the members are not in agreement, a third faculty member reads and evaluates the examination and determines the outcome.
  • Comprehensive Exam Pass - The student must answer every question on the examination in order to be evaluated. Students must successfully pass all questions on the exam in order to qualify as satisfactorily completing the requirement.
  • Comprehensive Exam Schedule - Comprehensive examinations are administered at various times during the year.
