Applicants must complete both a Counseling Psychology Program application and a University application. Applicants with excellent credentials are invited to campus for an interview with faculty and students and for a campus tour. Applications received after the deadline date of January 15 are not reviewed. A supplemental application is required. Anyone familiar with the applicant’s academic or clinical experience/competencies may write letters of recommendation. In general, the most common source of these letters is college/university faculty members and work supervisors.
Statement
of Goals:
Applicants should submit a Statement of Goals. This statement is evaluated against the program’s mission. Applicants are asked to submit two essays (1-2 double-spaced pages each) answering the following questions: 1)Describe three major life goals and how you plan to achieve them. 2) Why do you want to become a counseling psychologist?
Standardized
Test Scores:
The GRE is required. Scores on both the Verbal and Quantitative portions of the GRE should be above 500. See the Counseling Psychology Webpage at http://www.temple.edu/education/counspsych for details.Minimum TOEFL score or range of scores needed to be accepted:
600 on the paper-based test or 250 on the computer-based test.
Interview:
Applicants who pass the initial application screening will be invited for an individual interview with members of the faculty and doctoral students during February and March. The interviews will be used to obtain additional data related to admissions criteria (e.g., clarify questions raised by the candidate’s application) and will be used to make an assessment of communication skills which are associated with success in counseling psychology training.

Advanced Standing
The student’s advisor, in consultation with the Director of Doctoral Training, evaluates the student’s transcript during the student’s first semester of the program and awards advanced standing based on the relevance of the courses taken in relation to the Counseling Psychology Program.
The maximum number of advanced standing credits awarded is 30.
