(Concentration: Team and Organizational Development)
The master’s degree in Adult and Organizational Development offers students advanced study in the areas of adult learning and training, and team and organizational development. The program is concerned with adult training, program development, and organizational consultation in diverse settings, such as educational, community-based and governmental organizations, associations and the workplace. Its mission is to prepare practitioners capable of facilitating learning and change for adults, as individuals, as well as for communities and organizations in which they function. The program is intended for adult educators and administrators, trainers, consultants, program and instructional developers, and facilitators. It will serve as a training ground for individuals wishing to enter into these professions and as an opportunity to upgrade skills for those already in the field. The program is open to students seeking either a first or second master's degree.

A few courses are offered at the Fort Washington and Center City campuses.
Students are able to complete the degree program through classes offered after 4:30 p.m. Students able to complete the degree program on a part-time basis (8 credit hours or less per semester).

There are two major specializations in the program: 1) Adult Learning and Training- the development of skills in developing and teaching instructional/training programs for adult personal and professional development. The study of research and theory on adult learning and development is emphasized. Topics include: adult learning objectives, teaching/training methods that suit cognitive, behavioral, and affective learning, the development of learning materials, the design and sequencing of adult learning activities, emerging technologies, and program evaluation; and 2) Organizational and Team Development- the development of assessment, planning, facilitation, and consulting skills to help teams and organizations design and implement change. The study of research and theory about group development, organizational effectiveness, and change processes is emphasized. Topics include: stages of team development, cooperation and trust building, problem solving tools, organization design, and strategic planning models.

Graduates typically pursue careers as trainers or consultants in training/HR departments in large private and public organizations, in firms that specialize in training/organizational development, in adult education centers, and in independent practice.

The program has a strong interdisciplinary focus. Students are encouraged to take courses throughout the University, especially in instructional technology, human resource administration, communication sciences and counseling/educational psychology. In addition, the program concentrates on applications in a wide variety of educational settings: formal and informal; public and private; schools and industries, etc.
