538. Independent Study in Speech, Language and Hearing Science. (1-6 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department and instructor.

Qualified students will be permitted to conduct investigations and an in-depth study under supervision in specific areas.

621-622-623. Basic Practicum in Speech -Language Pathology. (1-3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department.

Introduction to assessment and remediation of speech-language disorders. Emphasis on assessment tools, procedures, rationales, and interpretation.

624-625-626. Advanced Practicum in Speech Pathology. (1-3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department.

Advanced level practicum at a field affiliation or at Temple University Speech and Hearing Center (stuttering and voice disorders) with focus on in-depth diagnosis and treatment of a specific disordered population, i.e., L.D., M.R., post-CVA, stuttering, voice, hearing impairment, etc.

627-628-629. Basic Practicum in Audiology. (1-3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 530 and 531 or equivalent, and permission of department.

Basic practicum in audiology at Temple University Speech and Language Center or one of the field placements with emphasis on basic audiologic testing and interpretation.

630-631-632. Advanced Practicum in Audiology. (1-3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 627, 628, 629 and permission of the department.

Advanced practicum in audiology at one of Temple University's field placements with emphasis on special populations, differential diagnostic tests, tests for nonorganicity, hearing aid evaluations, counseling, etc.

633-634. Basic Practicum in Rehabilitative Audiology. (1-2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department and CS 532.

Basic-level practicum to expose students to the problems and therapeutic measures experienced by and available for hearing impaired individuals from childhood through adulthood in various habilitative/rehabilitative settings.

710. Seminar: Linguistics. (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of department.

721. Dysphagia in the Adult Population. (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of the department.

An overview of swallowing processes and disorders specific to the adult population, including evaluation, treatment and outcome data. The patient population includes people with neurologic impairment, head and neck surgery and people who are ventilator dependent.

722. Dysphagia in the Pediatric Population. (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of the department.

An overview of swallowing processes and disorders specific to the pediatric population. Treatment issues will include oral-pharyngeal skills, respiratory issues, positioning, gastric motility, compensatory maneuvers and neurodevelopmental factors. Evaluation and treatment of feeding in schools will be discussed.

723. Project in Speech -Language Pathology. (1 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of the department.

Intensive in-depth coverage of selected topics in speech and language related disorders. Topics are typically announced a semester in advance.

724. Adult Language Disorders: Management. (3 s.h.)

Prerequisites: CS 526 and permission of the department.

Current diagnostics and therapeutics in the area of adult neurogenic language disorders.

725. Disorders of Articulation and Phonology: Special Populations. (2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 522, 523 and 524 and permission of department.

Presentation of information and experiences to prepare the speech and language specialist to assess, diagnose and treat persons with articulation disorders associated with cleft palate, apraxia, dysarthria and oral myofunctional disorders.

726. Child Language Disorders: School Age. (2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 521, 523 and 524 and permission of the department.

Presentation of information and specific skills to prepare the speech and language specialist to function in the educational setting in a variety of roles.

727. Fluency Disorders: Special Populations. (2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 525 and permission of department.

A review of research relevant to the constructions of theory and to the development of therapeutic intervention. Goals and processes for intervention from preschool to adults.

728. Disorders of Voice: Instrumentation and Special Populations. (2 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 528 and permission of the department.

Presentation of information and the development of skills in the use and interpretation of objective measures of voice. The course will focus on the development of student skills in the use of instrumentation. For this reason class enrollments are limited.

729. Language and Deafness. (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: permission of the department.

An introduction to Deaf studies: the linguistic structure of American Sign Language, how modality of production-perception shapes language organization (comparisons of signed and spoken languages), Deaf culture, deafness and minority cultures, deafness and child development, issues and options in deaf education, deafness in old age.

730. Clinical Audiology. (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 234, 530 and 531 and permission of the department. Corequisite: CS 627.

Comprehensive coverage of: hearing sensitivity, equipment calibration, room acoustics, measures of pure tone and speech sensitivity, speech recognition and loudness measures, masking, impedance/admittance, impairment/disability/handicap measurement, cerumen management, and infection control.

731. Clinical Audiology II. (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 730 and permission of the department.

Coverage of nonorganic hearing loss, diagnostic testing for auditory lesions, central auditory tests, electrophysiologic/physiologic measures of auditory and vestibular function, professional scope of practice, ethics, risk management and liability, and professional advocacy.

732. Evoked Auditory Potentials. (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 234 and permission of the department.

Comprehensive coverage of evoked auditory potentials including electrocochleography, auditory brainstem response, middle latency responses and long latency responses including technical aspects of recording and interpreting these potentials.

734. Hearing Aids and Amplification Systems. (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: CS 530 and permission of the department.

Coverage of information on electro-acoustic characteristics and evaluation of hearing aids and assistive devices, probe tube and functional measurements of their benefit, philosophy, techniques and methods of selecting and fitting aids, hearing aid candidacy, rehabilitation after fitting.

735. Rehabilitative Audiology II. (3 s.h.)

Prerequisites: CS 530, 532 and 734 and permission of department.

Advanced issues in the field of aural (re)habilitation with emphasis on hearing aid technology, related instrumentation and interpersonal concerns are discussed.

737-738-739. Project in Audiology. (1 s.h.)

Prerequisites: permission of the department.

Concentrated study of special topics in the area of normal language development and disorders across culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

A colloquium for the presentation and evaluation of research reports by doctoral students in speech, and hearing science.
