Syllabus Statements


This sections contains suggested statements for faculty to include on their course syllabi or course Canvas site. We have deliberately written the statements in different styles and tones to provide a few variations to choose from. Feel free to edit and adapt the statements as you see fit for your particular course.

For any course at the university, but may be particularly useful for freshman seminar courses or introductory courses.

The Student Success Center (SSC) provides academic support to all Temple students. The SSC can help with...

  • Writing: Tutors in the Writing Center can give you engaged and critical feedback about your essays, assignments, and other written materials such as resumes or personal statements
  • Math and Science: Tutors in the STEM Learning Lab can help you review and understand challenging concepts and prepare for exams
  • Languages: The staff in the Language Lounge can help you develop proficiency in English, Spanish, Arabic, French, Italian, or Japanese
  • Academic Skills: Academic coaches can help you develop effective learning habits and strategies, including skills related to studying, test taking, and time-management
  • Group Study: Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) leaders help students in select challenging courses study together in a collaborative environment

Except for academic coaching, which is available by appointment only, all programs are available on a drop-in basis or by appointment. All services are free of charge, and several programs and resources are also available online.

Did you know Temple’s Student Success Center (SSC) offers tutoring for writing at the Writing Center? Writing Center tutors can help you understand and get started on your assignments, and they can also provide you with engaged, kind, and critical feedback on drafts of your work. The tutors are graduate and undergraduate students who are successful writers and experienced readers; all tutors have completed training in effective methods of coaching writers.

For courses that are covered by the STEM tutoring service.

The Student Success Center (SSC) offers free tutoring for this course through the STEM Learning Lab. During tutoring sessions, tutors will work with you one-on-one to review and understand the concepts in this course. The tutoring service is located in the Tuttleman Learning Center, suite 100, and is available on a drop-in basis or by booking an appointment online. PASS offerings vary from semester-to-semester.

The Student Success Center offers Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) for this course. PASS sessions are weekly study meetings that provide students with an opportunity to learn and review course content in an interactive, small-group setting. PASS sessions are guided by a trained peer leader and are designed to allow you to work with your fellow classmates to practice study strategies and deepen your understanding of course content. PASS sessions are free, voluntary, and open to all students enrolled in this course. You can work with a conversation partner to practice speaking, listening, and reading in Spanish, and you can also meet with a Spanish writing tutor to get support on essays and other texts written in Spanish. Both services are free and available by appointment or on a drop-in basis in the Tuttleman Learning Center, suite 201. Courses that are covered by the Language Lounge’s offerings. Typically, the offerings include Arabic, Italian, French, and Japanese, but the languages can vary from semester-to-semester.

The Language Lounge offers support to help you develop your proficiency and fluency in more than one language. A conversation partner can work with you to practice your listening, speaking, and reading skills in {INSERT FOREIGN LANGUAGE}. The Language Lounge services are free and available by appointment or on a drop-in basis. For courses targeting English language learners (ELL) or enrolling significant numbers of ELLs.
