Symptoms, diseases, operative procedures, laboratory tests, diagnostic and treatment terms, and abbreviations are studied.

3101. Health Information Systems in Acute Care (4 s.h.) F.

The health information documentation system is studied for the acute care setting, including the development, content, format, use and standards of clinical documentation. Content includes the analysis of the health record; forms and computer screen designs; master person index; and, storage, retention and retrieval systems in the paper-based and electronic environments. Accreditation standards are also studied.

3103. U.S. Health Care System (3 s.h.) F.

The health care delivery system is studied, with a focus on issues related to access, cost and quality. System components are examined including: important values and beliefs; the historical development of the health care system and the current status; health services financing; the role of health care professionals; the use of technology; outpatient, primary care, inpatient, managed care, long-term care and integrated services; issues for special populations; the process and purpose of health policy; and, future options for the delivery system. The role of the health information management professional is examined within the context of the health care system, including the importance of the professional Code of Ethics.

3105. Language of Medicine (4 s.h.) F.

The in-depth analysis of the language of medicine for the body systems, including medical and anatomical terminology. The language is learned by studying definitions, the process of word construction, spelling and the analysis of the applications commonly used by members of the health care professions. This body of knowledge includes symptoms, diseases, operative procedures, laboratory tests, diagnostic and treatment terms, pharmacological interventions and abbreviations, as reflected in medical documentation. Understanding the language is explored by reading and interpreting the documentation in patient medical records.

Course addresses medical research methodologies; computation of routine health care institutional statistics; the United States vital statistics system; and, presentation and interpretation of health care data.

Federal and state legislation and regulations for health information systems with a focus on privacy and confidentiality; negligence, malpractice and liability; access to health information; and, informed consent and contracts.

3204. Health Information Systems in Nonacute Care (3 s.h.) S.

Prerequisite: HIM 3101 (0106) and HIM 3103 (0141) with C or better.

An examination of non-acute, specialty health care systems at mental health, substance abuse, ambulatory, long term care, home health, managed care, correctional, hospice, rehabilitation, dental, and, veterinary settings. The focus is on documentation requirements; accreditation and licensure standards; required data sets; and, reimbursement systems and methodologies. The role of the health information management professional is examined within the context of these settings. Course also includes an examination of disease and procedural indices, specialized registries and databases.

Pathophysiology is studied, with a focus on the clinical aspects of disease, such as, inflammation, infection, and neoplasm. Diseases affecting selected body systems are also studied, such as, cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive. Anatomy and physiology, the language of medicine and pharmacological terms are reviewed.

3208. International Classification of Disease (4 s.h.) F S SS.

Prerequisite: HIM 3105 (0103)with C or better. Co-Requisite: HIM 3206 (0271) or permission of instructor.

An intensive coding course, based on the International Classification of Disease classification system, as modified for use in the United States. The emphasis of instruction will be on application of coding principles for the acute care inpatient setting. The Medicare inpatient prospective payment system and the determination of diagnostic related groups (MS-DRGs) for hospital reimbursement purposes will also be addressed.

This course includes the study of organizational behaviors, management, and leadership and emphasizes the role of the health information management professional.

3285. Professional Practice Internship (2 s.h.) F S SS.

Prerequisite: HIM 3101 (0106), HIM 3103 (0141), HIM 3105 (0103), HIM 3111 (0251), HIM 3113 (0107) with C or better and permission of department chair.

A supervised clinical internship that facilitates an understanding of the professional practice aspects of the health information system. The student will learn about the organization, regulation, accreditation and logistics of the acute care information system, as well as non-acute care components, such as, long term care; behavioral health; utilization, risk and quality management; classification and reimbursement systems and datasets; and patient care registries.

4101. Health Informatics: Infrastructure and Standards (3 s.h.) F.

Study of the electronic health record (EHR), including architecture; network topologies and devices; telecommunication systems; and, transmission media and interfacing. Includes industry standard protocols, with a focus on regulatory requirements and health information security.

A coding course, based on the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding system that is used for classifying physician and hospital outpatient services. The course examines the role of CPT codes in claim submission, benefit adjudication and provider reimbursement. Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) II is also addressed and coding skills for the application of coding principles are developed.

4107. Quality Improvement in Healthcare (3 s.h.) F.

Course addresses quality management processes and total quality management with an emphasis on health information services. Additional topics presented include: medical staff credentialing, risk management, data analysis and presentation and clinical outcomes.

Life cycle of computerized clinical information systems and the electronic health record (EHR), including cost-benefit analysis, return on investment, requests for proposal and depreciation. Health information systems and applications are studied, such as, encoders, medical record tracking, abstracting, quality improvement, dictation/transcription and release of information.

This is a capstone course which includes methods and management tools used in the analysis of health information systems, including the development of objectives, policies and procedures; benchmarking; workflow, productivity measurement, layout analysis, and project management.

4211. Political, Social and Ethical Aspects of Health Information (2 s.h.) S.

Analysis of the impact of public policy formulation, with an emphasis on health information management systems. Includes discussion of the legislative and regulatory process and the role of advocacy by the professional association. Research and health information management ethical issues are examined.

4213. Healthcare Reimbursement Systems (3 s.h.) S.

Reimbursement methodologies are studied, as they relate to a variety of health care settings, payers and patient populations. Case mix analysis, charge master description, revenue cycle management, claims processing and fraud and abuse are discussed. Provides an overview of accounting and financial terms used by health care managers.

Writing intensive capstone course that requires a formal paper regarding an important and current health information management issue. Problems and cases are also used for the development of critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills. The assignments facilitate the application of health information management expertise and the skills needed for a professional career path.
