New Course Numbering System

All undergraduate course numbers have been changed, effective first Summer Session 2007.  The old course numbers appear throughout this publication in parentheses, unless otherwise noted.  For more details on course renumbering, go to the Course Renumbering website at http://renumbering.temple.edu. The "Course Menu" option on the Course Renumbering website provides a searchable database of courses with their old and new numbers.

The new course numbers follow specific guidelines:

07xx: Preparatory courses.

08xx: General Education pilot courses.

09xx: Honors General Education pilot courses.

1xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their first year of study.

2xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their second year of study.

3xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their third year of study.

4xxx: Courses appropriate for undergraduate students in their fourth year of study.

5xxx: Courses primarily for graduate students; however, undergraduate students in their third or fourth year may enroll in such courses with permission.

Honors courses have a “9” as the second digit (x9xx) and their titles contain the word “Honors.”

Writing Intensive courses end in “96,” “97” and “98.”

Core courses are identified by their Core indicator, which is found after the title in the course description.  Core courses may also be found by selecting the Core Requirements option in the Course Schedule at www.temple.edu/tucourses.

The abbreviations and codes used in these course descriptions are as follows:

Letters in old course numbers

C satisfies a requirement in one of the University Core Curriculum areas except Studies in Race and Writing-Intensive.

H is a University Honors course. Old course numbers in the 0090's or 0190's were Honors Core courses.

R satisfies the Studies in Race requirement, and may also satisfy another Core Curriculum requirement.

W counts toward satisfying the Core Curriculum's writing requirement.

X satisfies a requirement in one of the Core areas, and also counts toward satisfying the Core Writing-Intensive requirement.

General Education Pilot Courses

Temple University is gearing up to introduce a new version of the required University Core curriculum. The new program is called General Education (Gen Ed), and features innovative courses taught by dedicated, experienced faculty. Gen Ed courses are exciting because they make connections between what you are studying and what really matters --to you, to your future and to the future of the planet. You’ll be more active in a Gen Ed course, as you and the other students develop your own opinions and debate controversial issues. Some Gen Ed courses use the city of Philadelphia as a point of reference, with field trips and projects that emphasize Temple’s urban setting. Others take a more global perspective, drawing connections to the international context.

Try a Gen Ed course and experience Temple education at its cutting edge.

Each Gen Ed pilot course earns Core credit.  Upon successful completion (a grade of C- or higher), the Gen Ed pilot course(s) will automatically display in your DARS for the appropriate Core area. Check with your advisor to ensure that the course fits with your academic plan.

Click on the links below to view course descriptions within each Gen Ed area. A Gen Ed course may be offered by more than one department. The Note field in the course description provides information on which departments offer the Gen Ed course. The number for the course is the same in each department that offers the course. Not all courses are taught every semester by each department. Check OWLnet (owlnet.temple.edu) or the Course Schedule (www.temple.edu/tucourses) for the list of courses being offered by departments in a specific semester.

To learn more about Gen Ed, visit the website at www.temple.edu/gened.

CORE COURSES

This basic list of the courses approved for each Core area is provided for the convenience of students and advisors.

For descriptions of these courses, look in this publication under the department offering the course.

To see if a course is being offered in any particular semester, consult the list of "Core Courses" in the printed Guide to Registration or search the Course Schedule online at www.temple.edu/tucourses.

For a comprehensive list of Writing-Intensive courses, Core requirements and policies, descriptions of the Core areas, and other Core-related information, see the Core Curriculum section of the online Undergraduate Bulletin. For recent Core news, visit the Core and Transfer website at www.temple.edu/vpus/ucc/.
