Foundational Courses

0001. Introduction to New Media (3 s.h.) F.

Cross Listed with BTMM 0089.

From myspace to ourspace. A look at social interaction on the web, its relationship to social responsibility and media communication theory. We will explore the notions of public and private, community interaction along with real and fictional identity. Basic softwares will be inrtoduced to build a class web site.

Note: Students taking BTMM 0150 may not enroll in this course for credit.

0002. Introduction to Interdisciplinary New Media 2 (3 s.h.) S.

Prerequisite: NMIC 0001 or equivalent intro to digital multimedia. Students taking BTMM 70 may not enroll in this course for credit.

From ourspace to yourspace. A foundation level course that investigates interactivity and mapping. This class will introduce PHP and GIS scripting as well as look at the integration of wireless technologies and their potential. The course serves as the second half of the introduction to the NMIC.

0391. Special Topics in Production (4 s.h.) F S.

Design and Visual Language. Taught by Elizabeth Kilroy (adjunct). This class is an introduction to creating, planning and producing visual communication design for screen and print. Composition, typography as an element of information design and the interaction of color and form, as well as text and image. Design applications related to producing all forms of advanced graphic design will be introduced.

Note: Section 01 is at introductory level only.

Upper Division Courses

0301. New Media Colloquium (1 s.h.) F.

Cross Listed with FMA 0249, JPRA 0249, and BTMM 0249.

A forum in which we will look at the new media landscape from a number of different angles exploring the question "what constitutes effective new media communication" We will examine new media work in subject areas ranging from documentary/journalism to art spaces to entertainment to successful commercial enterprises with the intention of developing a critical understanding of how to effectively use the medium.

Note: This course is required for the completion of the New Media Interdisciplinary Concentration and open to all SCAT students,

0302. New Media Synthesis (4 s.h.) S.

Prerequisite: At least three prior new media courses, NMIC 0001-0002 or equivalent or special permission by the instructor.

A capstone course in the New Media Interdisciplinary Concentration. A studio and critique based class for the development of a portfolio project suitable for grant and school applications. Projects will be conceptualized, laid out in an information architecture document, prototyped and written about in a proposal format.

0391. Advanced Special Topics in Production (4 s.h.) F.

Prerequisite: 0391 or permission of the instructors..

Advanced Dynamic Web. Taught by Elizabeth Kilroy (adjunct) and Howard Walowitz (CIS). Design and programming will be used to develop advanced web team projects. The type pf projects will span both commercial and creative uses of the internet.

0393. Special Topics in New Media (2-4 s.h.) F S.

Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

An exploratory production workshop with varying special topics. Spring 2005: Game of Life. Co-taught by Professors Hana Iverson (NMIC) and Sarah Drury (FMA). Human-computer interaction will be explored within the dynamics of game parameters. Fall 2005: 393.01 Neighborhood Narratives. Co-taught by Hana Iverson (NMIC) and Steve Bull (Adjunct/Touch Tone Tours). Wireless technologies will be used to explore the community stories of selected neighborhoods in Philadelphia. 393.02 Virtual Spaces. Co-taught by Hana Iverson (NMIC) and Rolf Lakamper (CIS). Using computers to construct fictional worlds in 3D space and/or imaginative digital intervention in real space.

0399. Directed Projects In New Media (1-4 s.h.) F S.

Directed projects and independent study in interdisciplinary new media. Topics will vary.
