Conversation based on the reading of intermediate-level texts. Review of grammar with special attention to increasing vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.

Prerequisite: Russian 0062 or equivalent or permission of instructor.

Intensive work in spoken and written Russian needed by business executives and other travelers. Vocabulary, idiomatic usage and special terminology for professional needs. Cultural aspects, practice in personal contact and letter writing.

Reading of selected masterpieces by authors such as Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Pushkin, Leskov, Chekhov, Gorky, and Bunin. Analysis and discussion.

0144. Soviet Short Story in Translation (2 s.h.)

Survey of the Soviet short story. stories by writers such as A.N. Tolstoy, Babel, Pilnyak, Sholokhov, Katayev, V. Nekrasov, Dudintsev, Zoshchenko, Bulgakov, Kazakov, Paustovsky, and Ilf and Petrov. Oral and written reports.
