Secondary Education: Additional Requirements by Concentration

You will need to have taken prerequisite coursework in your concentration area before you are eligible for admission. A prerequisite evaluation will be conducted when your application and all official transcripts are received. All prerequisite courses should be completed with a grade of C or better to count.


English

Applicants must have completed an undergraduate major or its equivalent, with approximately 36 semester hours of undergraduate coursework in the subject area (including a linguistics course).

Science

Applicants must have completed an undergraduate major or the equivalent (e.g. biology, chemistry, earth science, etc.), with approximately 30 semester hours of undergraduate coursework in the subject area. For general science majors, coursework must cover at least three science areas with a yearlong course and a concentration in any area.

World Languages

Before being admitted, applicants must have completed an undergraduate major or the equivalent in a subject area (e.g. French, Spanish, etc.) with approximately 36 semester hours of undergraduate coursework in the subject area.

  • Non-native speakers must have taken the first two elementary courses and 10 three-credit courses, with a minimum of 30 credits in the foreign language at the college level for certification in one foreign language.  Work should include courses in composition, contemporary literature, conversation, culture and civilization and linguistics.  
  • Native speakers must have taken eight university courses in the department of the language of certification (e.g., the Spanish Department) and be versed in language, linguistics, literature and culture.

Applicants must provide official score reports demonstrating a passing score on the Praxis Fundamental Subjects: Content Knowledge Test (5511) in addition to the Praxis II exam.

Other Foreign Language Areas

Candidates for all other foreign language areas should take the ACTFL test, which includes a written (when available) and oral exam that is graded on a proficiency scale rather than a point scale. Both the written and oral exams must be taken when available. The minimum proficiency to qualify is Intermediate High - Code 120.
