Admission Requirements

Admissions requirements vary depending on how you enter the program.

Regular Entry MSW

Start Term: Fall
Campus Options: Main Campus
Format: Full time (Main Campus only) and part time

Applicants are not required to have a BSW but must have a bachelor’s degree with a broad liberal arts foundation from an accredited undergraduate institution and a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Online Regular Entry MSW

Start Term: Fall
Campus Options: Online with three-day, in-person training between years one and two
Format: Part time

Applicants are not required to have a BSW but must have a bachelor’s degree with a broad liberal arts foundation from an accredited undergraduate institution and a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Students must have access to proper technology and be able to attend the three-day, in-person training. Learn more about specific technology requirements for the online program

Advanced Standing MSW

Start Term: Summer I
Campus Options: Main Campus
Format: Full time (Main Campus only) and part time

Applicants must have completed their BSW from a Council on Social Work Education–accredited program within the past five years and have a minimum 3.25 GPA, both overall and in their major. 

MSW-MPH Dual Degree

Format: Full time and part time onsite, online or blended onsite and online

If you are interested in the MSW-MPH dual degree, apply through either SocialWorkCAS (Social Work Centralized Application Service) or SOPHAS (Public Health Common Application System). Your application materials will be shared with the School of Social Work or the Public Health Admissions team.

NOTE: Students must meet admissions requirements for both schools/programs. Temple University School of Social Work offers a Supplemental Application waiver for those who complete an application through SocialWorkCAS by Feb. 1, 2018.

Application Components

Applications will not be reviewed until all components have been received by the School of Social Work. All applicants must apply via SocialWorkCAS and directly to Temple University

  1. SocialWorkCAS Application: The CAS application fee is $75. All items must be submitted through SocialWorkCAS. To access the SocialWorkCAS site, use Google Chrome or Firefox. If you have other issues with site access, contact Liaison International’s technical support team at socialworkcas@liaisoncas.com or 857-304-2016.

  2. Temple Supplemental Application: This is required for all applicants, regardless of the term to which they apply. Be sure to select the accurate term for which you are applying: Fall is correct for regular entry; Summer I is correct for advance standing.

  3. Supplemental Application fee waiver: The School of Social Work offers a Supplemental Application fee waiver for all students who complete applications through SocialWorkCAS by Feb. 1, 2018. In order to receive the application fee waiver, take the following steps.

    1. Complete the SocialWorkCAS application.

    2. Fill out Temple University Supplemental Application, and stop when prompted for payment. Do not enter any payment information. (If you enter payment and submit the application, we will not be able to refund the application fee.)

    3. Email MSW@temple.edu for your Temple Supplemental Application to be processed. Confirmation will be given within two business days.  

  4. Official transcripts: Official transcripts from all the undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) institutions you’ve attended are required. Mail them to
    SocialWorkCAS Transcript Processing Center
    P.O. Box 9212
    Watertown, MA 02471.

  5. Résumé: Submit a current résumé or curriculum vitae with your application.

  6. Goal Statement: A statement of professional plans and goals is an important part of the admissions application. It provides an opportunity for you to show your motivation for pursuing graduate study in the field of Social Work, relevant personal and professional experiences, and knowledge of diversity and social justice. This essay is evaluated based on your ability to reflect on and summarize significant and relevant experiences, to conceptualize and think critically, and to write proficiently.

  7. An essay of four to six pages (double-spaced, 12-point font, with name and page numbers in the header) should be composed in which you

    1. give reasons for undertaking graduate study in Social Work at Temple.

    2. describe significant experiences—such as community, field placement, volunteer and/or work, volunteer—with people of various ethnic, gender, national origin, racial backgrounds, religious, sexual orientation and/or social class, and the impact and/or relevance of those experiences.

    3. identify a social problem that reflects social injustice or oppression, describes the prevalence of and contributing factors to the problem, and discusses the social injustices associated with the problem.

  8. Letters of Reference: Three academic or professional references are required.

Additional requirements for advanced standing students

Students entering with advanced standing also need to submit an essay about their previous field experience and their final evaluation from their senior field experience.

Additional requirements for international students

TOEFL: To be considered, you must receive a minimum score of 550 paper-based; 213 computer-based; or 79 internet-based. This information should be sent to the CAS.

WES Evaluation, www.wes.org is required. This can be requested/submitted through the CAS using their system. International students should review the university's application process and admission requirements

Application Deadlines

Applications are now being accepted for the fall 2018  semester for all students except advanced standing students, who may start the program in summer 2018. Submit your application.
