Fee: $60 for the online application

Process: You’ll apply through the Centralized Application Service for Public Health and then complete Temple’s supplemental application.

Program Prerequisites: To apply for this doctorate degree in behavioral sciences, you must have a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline. Most applicants also have a master’s degree in public health (MPH). For applicants who do not have an MPH, prerequisite course requirements include completion of graduate courses covering theories of health behaviors, biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health and health policy. and political and economic aspects of health (the 5 core courses of the MPH curriculum). Applicants without an MPH degree can consult with the senior graduate advisor and admissions coordinator, Ms. Theresa White, to determine if their previous courses meet the prerequisites, or to learn more about the postbaccalaureate certificate that also satisfies the prerequisite requirements.

Application Components

The admissions committee takes a full portfolio view of all applicants to the program. An important consideration is the match in interests between a candidate and a Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences faculty member available to mentor a new student. Other important application components include

  1. Recommendations: Three letters of recommendation from evaluators, preferably university of college faculty who can give insight into your academic abilities and speak to your capacity for doctoral-level research and study.

  2. Goals statement: In no more than 750 words, you should cover the following:

    • State your interest in this particular program in Social and Behavioral Health Sciences
    • Articulate your academic and research interests and achievements
    • Detail how your interests in social and behavioral health relate to your career goals and the work of faculty members associated with the PhD program. Emphasize linkages between your research interests and the emphases of the program and faculty wherever you can. See descriptions of faculty research interests.
  3. Writing sample: The writing sample should be no more than 10 pages unless it is a published work. The department prefers scholarly articles, technical reports or academic professional papers.

  4. GRE score: Your score should be at the 50th percentile or higher. Most admitted students have GRE scores much higher than the 50th percentile.  

  5. Current résumé or CV should be submitted.

Additional Requirements for International Students

TOEFL score: A minimum 79 iBT or 550 PBT is required. Learn more about applying to Temple as an international graduate student.
