Master of Arts in Musical Theater Studies

Develop advanced skills in acting, dance, movement and music with the Master of Arts in Musical Theater Studies in Temple’s School of Theater, Film and Media Arts. This 30-credit, one-year master’s degree emphasizes hands-on learning and instruction to prepare graduates for careers in education, performance or production in musical theater.

Achieve practical training through an interdisciplinary, progressive curriculum that blends classroom study with musical theater performance skills. You’ll gain expertise in all facets of musical theater through coursework focused on

  • American musical theater,
  • dramatic composition,
  • performing arts direction and
  • the business of theater.

You’ll study with faculty from both the Boyer College of Music and Dance and the School of Theater, Film and Media Arts. The Musical Theater Studies MA faculty members’ experience includes screen and stage performances across an array of fields, all housed within a nationally accredited theater department.

The culminating event for this master’s program is the final written thesis, which can be a demonstration project, performance or research paper.

Classes & Curriculum

All graduate students complete core courses in one year. The required courses are

  • American Music Theater,
  • Directing for the Musical Stage,
  • Dramaturgy and
  • The Business of Theater.

  • Rehearsal and Performance.

    Tuition & Fees

    In keeping with Temple’s commitment to access and affordability, this Master of Arts offers a competitive level of tuition with multiple opportunities for financial support.

    Tuition rates are set annually by the university and are affected by multiple factors, including program degree level (undergraduate or graduate), course load (full- or part-time), in-state or out-of-state residency, and more. These tuition costs apply to the 2021–2022 academic year.

    Pennsylvania resident: $1,078.00 per credit
    Out-of-state: $1,441.00 per credit
