Graduate Certificate in Military Counseling

The Graduate Certificate in Military Counseling gives behavioral healthcare providers the capacity to expand their practice to service members, veterans and their families. It also opens the door for practitioners who might wish to work with the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, all branches of the armed forces, reserve forces and the National Guard.

The objective of military counseling is to provide care to serving members of the military and to counsel those in need of behavioral healthcare. Common counseling includes mental health issues and the treatment and prevention of substance abuse.

The certificate does not confer a degree, but applicants must have a master’s degree in a related discipline before beginning the certificate program.

Credit Requirements

Earning the certificate requires the completion of four courses for 12 graduate credits or 140 continuing education, non-credit units. Before registering, students can choose to complete the certificate for graduate-level credit or as non-credit continuing education courses. Who Might Be Interested?

The Military Counseling certificate complements the services provided by counselors, pastoral counselors, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and other clinical practitioners.

Curriculum

Coursework consists of two required courses and two electives. Required courses include

  • Military Culture: The Service Member, Veteran and Family in the Social Environment, and
  • Military Health Care, Policy and Community Response.

Electives include in-depth explorations of addiction, assessment techniques, counseling strategies and grief for military personnel and their families.

Admissions Information

  • You must hold a baccalaureate degree.
  • You should also hold a master's or doctoral degree from an accredited university in a related field of study such as
    • counseling,
    • pastoral counseling,
    • psychiatry,
    • psychology or
    • social work.

Pennsylvania resident: $898.00 per credit
Out-of-state: $1,231.00 per credit
