Faculty Writing Retreats:

make writing your top priority

Fall Writing Retreat:

October 15-18, 2009 (evenings and weekends)

Interim Writing Retreat:

January 6-15, 2010

If you have difficulty making time for writing during the semester, if you struggle with motivating yourself to tackle a writing project, or if you just get tired of the isolation of working on a project alone, please consider registering for a faculty writing retreat at Temple. The goal of the retreat is to support faculty who are writing for publication by providing:

•  intense and focused time for writing.

•  support on setting realistic writing goals and solving common writing problems.

•  fellowship and motivation. The retreat provides an opportunity for faculty to come together and support each other.

Location:
The Writing Center (201 Tuttleman Learning Center)

Cost: $100, which includes

•  A $50 supply fee that helps us cover the costs of office supplies and food. We encourage you to ask your dean or chair to cover this fee.

•  A refundable deposit of $50. To encourage your sustained commitment, we take $50 from you and hold it hostage. This money is returned to you in full, provided you attend and write every day.

Is the Writing Retreat for You?
The retreat is open to all Temple faculty and instructors in any department. For the retreat to work, your project must be at a stage where sustained writing time makes sense. (In other words, your research and/or data collection and analysis must be completed to the point that you are ready to sit in a chair and write.) You must also be prepared to commit to the full program: a total of at least thirty-five hours of writing.

What to Expect
The Fall retreat will take place evenings and weekends, allowing time to write Thursday and Friday evenings from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Logistics
Writing Retreat participants may bring their own laptops or use the computers available in the Writing Center. (The university provides wireless Internet access for participants using their own laptops.) In addition, participants can bring boxes of notes, data, books, etc. These items can be secured in the Writing Center for the duration of Writing Retreat. Technical support will be available on an on-call basis via online chat or at the TECH Center (for more serious problems). The Writing Center will provide access to printers and all the necessary writing-related supplies (pens, paper, staples, etc). We will also provide snacks and drinks. Lunch will be provided on most days.

Registration
The faculty Writing Retreat is limited to 20 participants. To reserve your space, complete the registration form to the right and submit the full payment of $100 (deposit + fee) to the Writing Center.
