 UNIVERSITY CORE CURRICULUMThe Core Curriculum is currently Temple University's liberal education requirements for all undergraduate students who were admitted to Temple prior to Fall 2008 and all transfer students who are admitted to Temple prior to Fall 2010. It guides students in taking a set of courses, many of them chosen by the student from lists of approved courses. The Core, in combination with a major field of study, is intended to provide the intellectual skills and the knowledge needed for academic success in college and provide a useful education for one's career, citizenship, and personal life. Descriptions of Core and GenEd courses are published in the Undergraduate Course Descriptions catalog available online through the web version of the Undergraduate Bulletin Because not all approved courses are offered every semester, the Registration Resources page contains a list of Core and GenEd courses being offered for the current and/or upcoming registration period. Eliminated Core CoursesWith the introduction of GenEd several Core courses are no longer offered at Temple University (excluding the Japan campus). Core students can use GenEd replacement courses to satisfy the corresponding Core area through Spring 2011. Click here for the Eliminated Core Course List If you previously completed one of these Core courses and would like to replace the grade, you will need to take the designated GenEd substitute. The repeat course may not be used to satisfy multiple areas of Core. Students who have earned credit for one or more of the Core courses on the list cannot earn additional credit for the corresponding GenEd course (with the exception of Mosaic and GenEd Math courses). For example, if a student has successfully completed SOC 1376 (R059), s/he can not earn additional credit for any of the following: AF-AM 0829, ANTHRO 0829, GUS 0829, HISTORY 0829, POL SCI 0829, or SOC 0829. Note: GenEd courses cannot be used to satisfy multiple Core areas; GenEd courses cannot be used to satisfy Core Writing Intensive requirements. Consult your advisor for details to develop a revised plan for meeting Core requirements. This information does NOT apply to freshmen, who must use General Education courses to fulfill their General Education requirements. Taking Gen Ed Courses to Satisfy Core Requirements
Notes: *All General Education course numbers begin with “08XX”; all General Education Honors courses begin with “09XX.” ** Beginning Fall 2008, English 1002: College Composition (CO); English 1012: College Composition ESL (CO); English 1022: College Composition (RC); and English 1977: Honors Introduction to Literature and Composition (CO/HO) will no longer be offered. Choose from the GW (English 0802, 0812, or 0902: Analytical Reading and Writing) sections to complete your Core Composition requirement. *** Beginning Fall 2008, Intellectual Heritage 1196 (IA), Intellectual Heritage 1297 (IB), Intellectual Heritage 1996 (IA/HO), and Intellectual Heritage 1997 (IB/HO) will no longer be offered. Choose from GY (Mosaic 0851) sections to fulfill the Intellectual Heritage 1196 requirement; choose from GY (Mosaic 0951) sections to fulfill the Intellectual Heritage 1996 requirement; choose from GZ (Mosaic 0852) sections to fulfill the Intellectual Heritage 1297 requirement; choose from GZ (Mosaic 0952) sections to fulfill the Intellectual Heritage 1997 requirement. **** Students who have completed Intellectual Heritage 1196 and still need to fulfill the Intellectual Heritage 1297 requirement can complete Mosaic 0851 or 0852. Honors students who have completed Intellectual Heritage 1996 and still need to fulfill the Intellectual Heritage 1997 requirement can complete Mosaic 0951 or 0952. ***** GQ courses can be used to satisfy either QA or QB Core requirements; however, students required to complete the Core Curriculum must complete a total of two courses to satisfy the Quantitative Reasoning requirement.
