Diamond Peer Teachers Program

Deadline for Applications for Spring 2009:

The Diamond Peer Teachers Program provides upper-level undergraduates at Temple the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of college-level teaching, to work with faculty mentors to develop their own pedagogical skills, and to provide supplemental instruction in lower-level courses. To be selected as a Diamond Peer Teacher, a student will:

• Ordinarily be a declared a major in the field; however, students interested in being a peer teacher in subject areas closely related to their declared major are welcome to apply.
• Have a cumulative GPA 3.25 with 60 credit hours by end of current semester.
• Have earned at least an A- in the course or courses (or equivalents) for which they are applying to be a Peer Teacher.

Peer Teachers can apply to work in any first- or second-year course in their major; students in the following disciplines/areas are especially encouraged to apply: Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, CIS, Economics, Finance, Intellectual Heritage, Mathematics, MIS, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, and Statistics.

Participants are required to attend the three-day Diamond Peer Teacher Institute.

Teaching Institute for Fall 2008 - August 25-27, 2008.

Monday 4:30pm - 9:00 pm (dinner provided);

Tuesday 9:00 am - 6:00 pm;

Wednesday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm (lunch provided). 

Institute Goals and Requirements

• Explain purpose of the program.
• Introduce students to the idea of supplemental instruction.
• Seminars and workshops on pedagogical issues.
• Peer Teachers will meet with their faculty mentor and discuss their role in the course. 

Diamond Peer Teachers are expected to

• Commit 12-15 hours per week during the semester to:
  • Attend the class in which they are a Peer Teacher;
  • Provide regularly scheduled tutoring / class contact for students in the class (one-two hours for every hour of class);
  • Keep two hours of “office hours” per week to meet individually with students;
  • Attend weekly meetings with their Faculty mentor:
  • Attend weekly meetings with other Peer Teachers.
• Submit a mid-term self-assessment.
• Submit a report / self assessment on their experience at the end of the semester.

Stipends

Each student will receive

• A stipend of $2,250 for approx. 16 weeks (including a $300 stipend for the 3-day pre-semester Teaching Institute).
• Tuition remission for one (1) credit hour internship.

Each faculty mentor will receive a stipend of $500.
