Learning Communities

FAQs

What is a Learning Community?

A Learning Community consists of two or more courses, scheduled in a block, in order to provide students with more integrated and meaningful learning experiences.

Who is eligible to join a Learning Community?

Learning Communities are designed primarily for new, first-year students.  However, they can be scheduled by transfer students with the help of their advisors.  Learning Communities are available for students in most undergraduate schools and colleges.

What do Learning Communities offer me?

Award-winning faculty, popular courses, and the opportunity to get to know your peers and build a support network. All of this while satisfying CORE, college, or major requirements!

What about a Freshman Seminar?

Learning for the New Century is a one-credit freshman seminar designed for students who are interested in gaining a better understanding of the academic and social transitions to college.  [Note: Seminars are also offered in the School of Communications and Theater and the College of Science and Technology.] Topics covered include: an introduction to college, getting to know your professors, test-taking strategies, career development, time management, and information literacy. Seminars are available as part of individual Learning Communities or as separate courses. NOTE: When the freshman seminar is linked to a particular Learning Community, students in these communities must register for the seminar.

When can I sign up?

You register for a Learning Community at the same time you register for your other classes. Ask your academic advisor which Learning Community is right for you. For more information, send an email to tulc@temple.edu or call Jermaine Williams, in the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies at 215-204-7596.
