Why can’t I register for courses online?
There are several reasons why a student is unable to register online for courses:
You are on academic warning or probation. We ask that you complete the Back-on-Track section of your Blackboard prior to meeting with an academic advisor.
You have completed 60 credits and have not declared your major.
The course you are trying to register for is closed. If the course is closed, you may attempt to obtain a green card (closed-section approval) from the department out of which the course is offered. Once obtained, you can bring the green card into an academic advisor.
The course for which you are trying to register requires special authorization. If the course requires special authorization, you can contact the department to discuss obtaining authorization. Some courses are restricted to a specific population of students and departments will not provide special authorization for these courses (i.e. some sections of IH 0851 and IH 0852 are restricted to ESL students – students who speak English as their second language). Whereas other courses might be restricted to majors only, but departments may provide authorization for these courses.
During your last semester, you processed a withdrawal semester or a medical withdrawal.
How do I get special authorization for closed courses?
Some courses may have restrictions on who is permitted to register. This is usually notated by the phrase "special authorization" or "majors only." If this is the case you can petition to the department for permission in writing. If granted, you can then bring that permission into your advising center to register. (Please note, students are not able to obtain this special permission for certain courses, such as: English 0701, English 0802, Mosaic 0851, and Mosaic 0852).
What’s considered full time student status?
12 to 17 credits is considered full time.
How many credits must I complete each academic year?
For financial aid purposes you need to complete at least 67% of your credits cumulatively at Temple. To graduate in 4 years (8 semesters) you will need to complete an average of 30-32 credits each academic year. (Please note, this number differs slightly for each major).
How many courses should I take each semester?
To graduate in 4 years (8 semesters) you will need to average 15-16 credits per semseter.
(Please note, this number differs slightly for each major). Some students may opt to take a lighter course load their first semester and make the credits up by taking a heavier course load later in their academic career.
Do I have to fulfill my Gen Eds all at once?
No. Most students take Gen Ed courses throughout the first 2 years (4 semesters)
of their degree.
When should I declare my major?
When you are ready. Some students spend one semester with us. Others spend up to four. You must declare by the time you complete 60 credits. Please see our Declaring a Major page.
I’m a freshman trying to register for my second semester, can I do this by myself?
You will need to attend a group advising session (or in some cases schedule an appointment with an advisor). You will receive information about this via your TUmail account prior to priority registration.
Do I need to make an appointment, or can I just walk in?
An appointment is the best way to meet with an advisor. An appointment guarantees you one-on-one time with an advisor and is the best way to ensure you will have enough time to have all of your questions answered. Express Advising is to answer quick policy and registration related questions. When in doubt we suggest scheduling an appointment.
