GENERAL NOTE: Since January 2001 the Core Curriculum has been under review by a
series of Faculty Senate task forces. In December 2003, the Senate Steering Committee
presented to the Senate for discussion and approval a proposal for a new General Education
Program based on the work of the most recent group, the General Education Task Force of
2003-4. Discussion of that proposal continues during this spring 2004 semester.

The proposal suggests an implementation date of mid-2006. Among the implementation details
yet to be worked out is the transition from the current Core to the new general education program.

In the meantime, the Core Curriculum remains in force for continuing and entering Temple
undergraduates.

What is Temple's Core Curriculum?

"The Core" is Temple University's general education program for all undergraduate students. It guides students in taking a set of courses, many of them chosen by the student from lists of approved courses. Together, the components of the Core are intended to provide the intellectual skills and the knowledge needed for academic success in college and, in combination with the specialized skills and knowledge acquired in a major field of study, a useful education for one's career, citizenship, and personal life.

The official University statement on the Core is published in the Core section of the Undergraduate Bulletin.

Other documents and information about the Core are available on the Core lists page of this web site. These include the 1986 document that established Temple's Core, the guidelines the faculty Core committee uses to approve courses for each Core area, and other documents and lists.
