Core Update

GENERAL NOTE: Since January 2001 the Core Curriculum has been under review by a series of Faculty Senate task forces. In December 2003, the Senate Steering Committee presented to the Senate for discussion and approval a proposal for a new General Education Program based on the work on the most recent group, the General Education Task Force of 2003-4. Discussion of that proposal continues during this spring 2004 semester.

The proposal suggests an implementation date of mid-2006. Among the implementation details yet to be worked out is the transition from the current Core to the new general education program.

In the meantime, the Core Curriculum remains in force for continuing and entering Temple undergraduates.

Errors in printed Class Schedule:

Geography and Urban Studies (GUS) C060, World Urban Patterns, is a Non-Western/Third World Core International Studies course.

In recent publications this fact is correctly indicated--with the asterisk (*) for Non-Western/Third World credit--in:

  • the list of Core International Studies courses in the 2001-2002 Undergraduate Bulletin, on page 61 in the printed version and in the electronic version
  • the list of "Core Courses Offered This Semester" for Summer I 2002, on page 14 of the printed Summer 2002 Class Schedule

However, the asterisk was inadvertently omitted from the course in the lists of "Core Courses Offered This Semester" in the printed Class Schedule for:

  • Fall 2001 (page 19)
  • Spring 2002 (page 17)
  • Summer II 2002 (page 16 of Summer 2002)
  • Fall 2002 (page 13)

These omissions were errors: GUS C060 always carries Non-Western/Third World International Studies Core credit.

Error in printed Course Descriptions. In the printed Undergraduate Course Descriptions for 2002-2003, Education X060, Education and Schooling in America, has an incorrect Required Course Indicator (RCI) of XC, which mistakenly identifies it as carrying Core American Culture, Studies in Race, and Writing-Intensive credit.

Education X060 is an American Culture and a Writing-Intensive course, but does not meet the Studies in Race requirement.

Another Education course, R065, Race and Racism in U.S. Education, carries the RCI of WR and meets the Studies in Race and Writing-Intensive requirement.

The description of Education X060 in the web version of Course Descriptions will show the correct RCI as of March 22.

A university-wide faculty task force, appointed by the Faculty Senate, has been reviewing the Core Curriculum over the past year. It will be presenting its report to the Senate Steering Committee in the near future. The Steering Committee will consider the task force's recommendations, and forward them to the Senate as appropriate, but no changes to the Core will be made for the coming academic year--despite any rumors that might be circulating.

The University Core Program Committee (UCPC) has decided not to accept proposals for new Core courses until the review of the Core is completed.

Errors in list of Core courses being taught in Spring 2001. On page 13 of the printed Class Schedule for the Spring 2001 semester there is a list of Core courses being taught in that semester. Incorrect information is provided in three of the sections of that list.

In the Arts section, Greek, Hebrew and Roman Classics (G/H/R Classics) C071, Greek Drama, is listed but in fact is not being taught and should have been removed from the list.

In the International Studies section, the asterisk (*) indicating that a course carries Non-Western/Third World credit was accidentally omitted from three courses. These courses DO carry Non-Western/Third World credit:

  • African American Studies H091, Honors Africa in the 20th Century
  • Geography and Urban Studies (GUS) C060, World Urban Patterns
  • Urban Education C060, Schooling and Development in Third World Societies

These omissions are limited to the list in the Class Schedule. The three courses are correctly identified in the 2000-2001 Undergraduate Bulletin and other University publications.

In the Studies in Race section, Greek, Hebrew and Roman Classics (G/H/R Classics) R112, Race: Ancient and Modern, should be added.

An error has been discovered in the list of International Studies Core courses in the Core section of the web and print versions of the 2000-2001 Undergradute Bulletin. Asian Studies C053, Introduction to World Religions, was incorrectly identified as carrying Non-Western/Third World International Studies credit. It is an International Studies course, but not a Non-Western/Third World one. A correction has been made in the web bulletin but the mistake was found too late to change the printed Bulletin. Students and academic advisors should be informed of the correct Core credit.

Up-to-date information about the Core is available in the Core section of the 2000-2001 Undergraduate Bulletin on the web. This section has been revised extensively since the previous Bulletin, and now includes information about related educational opportunities available to Temple students. The Bulletin will be available in print from the academic advising offices around September 1, 2000. There are links to the descriptions and course lists for the various Core areas on the Core Lists and Documents page.
