SPRING 2011

Body Wear, Where?

Wednesday, January 26 - Saturday, January 29

Reception Thursday, January 27, 6 pm

Body Wear has the ability to change the wearer into another being. It expresses bold emotion and explosive creativity. The students will regard the human body itself as the object to “wear” and exhibit innovative creations addressing this topic. All cultures tap into the power, real or imagined, of dress. After the mid-20th century, society entered into a mass consumption and production of garments and clothing. Students will exhibit works that break from the trend of universal uniformity and think beyond the idea that only fabric can be used to make garments. Brook Abboud, Rachel Barnes, Tara DeLutis, Alana Finkel, Kelly Flegal, Madeleline Hewitt, Bridgette Larson, Diana Mousetis, Claire Purcell, Elizabeth Riggio, Kristen Rosser, Jovana Sarver, Elizabeth Scheirer, Amelia Schwarzman, Ana Tamaccio, and Alyssa Wojcik will exhibit static garments and alternative presentation methods, including performance, photography, and video.

Gallery talk with Liz Hickey: Thursday, Oct 28, 6 pm

Produce is proud to present an exhibition featuring the work of Lizz Hickey and Tom Bennett. By means of dramatic rendering and stylistic reinterpretation of the human figure, the paintings and etchings in this show offer the viewer an opportunity to consider the way they think about their own reality. Hickey’s prints (image, right) embody a strong sense of humor with which the artist approaches ideas of fiction. Bennett (image, left) enters into a similar discourse about perception and actuality with his paintings, utilizing distortion and exaggeration to prompt thoughts about representation and accuracy. In pairing these artists, it is Produce’s goal to invite the viewer to contemplate fact and fiction, and the relationship between the two.

Who We Are: Selections from the Lewis Tanner Moore Collection
December 9 - 19

Calvin Burnett, The Juggler, Etching, 1948.

The art exhibition Who We Are: Selections from the African American Art Collection of Lewis Tanner Moore brings together figural and abstract works of art by modern and contemporary African American artists to explore the origin and expression of contemporary identity in terms of the universal nature of the human experience. Who We Are features work by Samuel Brown, Calvin Burnett, Marita Dingus, Reginald Gammon, Martina Johnson-Allen, Paul F. Keene, Jr., and Andrew Turner.

Curated by Tyler Art History graduate students Heather L. Castro, Natalie E. Jackson, and Rachel Kirchgasler as part of Dr. Susanna Gold’s course, “Race and Gender in American Art,” Who We Are connects the conception of identity to social understanding: we are our beliefs, our past, and ourselves. Topics explored in the exhibit include music and religion, personal and cultural history, and beauty rituals and perceptions of the body. While the work of each artist represented presents a specific response to these issues, the universality of these beliefs permits an audience of any ethnicity to respond by correlating their own life experience to notions of personal identity.

The exhibition is supported in part by the General Activities Fee, the Art History Department at the Tyler School of Art, and the Graduate Art History Organization through the Temple Student Government.

"The Fluid Field : Abstraction and Reference"
October 3 - 21, 2007
Tyler Gallery, Elkins Park
Curated by Dona Nelson, this exhibition is comprised of the work of ten women who graduated from Tyler School of Art, spanning the period from 1963 to 2007. Their paintings are distinguished by seriousness, sophistication and ambition. Working in an art form that has been dominated by men, these artists do not feel obligated to make paintings that specifically address their gender. This lack of obligation differentiates these ten artists from some women painters who became prominent in the 1980s and 1990s. The focus of the painters in "The Fluid Field : Abstraction and Reference," is the painterly field, which can include images and figures. The field functions as a broad contextual space that is no less important than the images.

First Year Out

October 11-November 5, 2005
Penrose Gallery, Elkins Park
This group exhibition was curated by the student group Produce in order to investigate the transition from student to emerging artist. Produce members put an open call out to artists who graduated in 2003-2004, and then selected works to be included in the show. Artists come from all over the country"”from Omaha, Nebraska to New York City"”and work in a variety of media including video, painting, photography, embroidery, and sculpture. This is a rare opportunity to see work by emerging artists selected by their peers.

Rain Harris: Poison Bottle
September 9-October 11, 2003
Tyler Gallery, Elkins Park
Harris covered each wall of the gallery with multiple case and ceramic shapes, each covered with various decorative floral appliqué patterns, pearly and metallic glazes, atop highly ornate wallpaper. Within these wall arrangements she displayed her ceramic "poison bottles" also covered with decorative elements including rhinestones, feathers and pearls. This imaginative immersive environment explores the boundaries between Victorian influences, "good taste" and kitsch. The work was created during the artist's residency at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia. The show was accompanied by an essay by Rachael Arauz, independent curator.
