Aritst Statement

Often associated with one another, education, intellectualism and radicalism maintain their own languages, tactics and sets of materials. In my most recent work, I mix and match their conditions- applying turn of the century grammar lessons to slogans of the 68 Paris student movement, or juxtaposing kids blocks with paving stones in the construction of a reading fort. I use the work to question, contemplate and- above all- play around with these historically autonomous practices.

For me, art making provides access to alternate logics. I make sculpture, video, collage, performance and drawing with the intention of generating unexpected knowledge. In 22 yellow sweaters for Patricia Lumumba, I attempt to turn 22 blue sweaters yellow in honor of Juliet Berto's character in the 1969 Godard film “Le Gai Savior”. I subject physical objects to wishful thinking with the desire to show or understand the relationship between idealism and disillusionment.
