Artist Statement

My work often has a nostalgia for old ideas, characters, and discoveries and revisits these ideas with fresh eyes. When discoveries, objects and ideas within the sciences were first conceived, they were for the most part earnest and projected a hope for the future. I find that inspiring and charming in a time when the future politically, environmentally and culturally seems grim.
Whimsical and peculiar happenings of the past and present are common inspiration for my work. I’m interested in the wonderment that bizarre natural phenomena can evoke. Therefore popular science and natural history continuously inform my practice. The array of subject matter in these fields is both vast and varied, yet seemingly related to one another. This is the approach I take to my studio practice in both subject matter and material.
