Artist Statement

Drawing on Klärchen’s song “heavenly sorrow, deadly joy”, in Goethe’s Egmont as one of the axioms still prevailing in the 21st century, I am interested in ideal images and counter-images that immediately come to our minds when speaking of love. My most recent work deals with the recognizable metaphors of love and romantic relationships deeply rooted in Western culture and transmitted today by advertising, film and popular literature. Furthermore my work is framed by the construct of the Old World, namely Europe and specifically Austria, addressing a nostalgia and romanticism for the past.
