Artist Statement
There is a peculiar
exchange between the mind and the environment: one’s environment only exists as
the mind perceives it. In this exchange, the body is a tool. It collects
information for the mind to process, and also acts as a communicator to the
outside world. My work revolves around this investigation of the self to the
psyche by creating scenes between the physical body, the intangible mind, and
the existing environment. I construct interactions revealing the perceived body,
as affected by its environment, through a relationship of sculptural objects. I
examine the intangible characteristics of the psyche using figurative sculpture
in order to allow the viewer to engage and identify with the work. The abstract
figurative sculptures in different positions convey somber emotion; isolated,
sheltered, and muted, they are contemplative rather than the active. The
surfaces of the work are treated with texture, carving, or drawing to act as
metaphors of emotional states. When representing mental or psychological
structure, the unseen becomes visible. Playing with the exchange between body,
mind, and environment, through sculpture and drawing, allows me to work toward
an understanding of the reality I lost.
