Alida Barden Artist Statement She was taken away from the suburbs and was given a home in the country among many trees and birds; she would never see her siblings again, never know her mother or father. In her younger years she saw many things: friends came and went (for she had outlived a few), she had several lovers (though never gave birth). She led great expeditions and thrilling hunts. In the warm sun of the day and in the daylight hours she lapped up the land because it was hers for the taking and at night slept soundly among ghosts. One day soon I know she will step quietly into the landscape, pausing for a moment to remember the good times, let the land and the trees and the birds and the deer and the squirrels tell her she is loved, and finally give her tired body back to the earth. |
