Artist Statement

My work addresses man’s complex interactions with nature: how he projects himself onto it, sees images in it, searches for the best view point, attempts to enhance it, and attempts to conquer it. It examines how a colored light show can transform a place into a spectacle, paradoxically saying it is important – LOOK AT THIS! – while suggesting the subject is not spectacular enough on its own. The work also questions who it is that’s doing the looking: the spectator, the tourist. By regurgitating modes of illusion found in pop culture (scale shifts, layers of artifice, enhanced lighting, Disney’s berms and weenies), my work explores how we perceive, and are made to perceive, the world around us.
