Andria Bibiloni Artist Statement Today, perhaps more than ever, the images we encounter in the media tend to compete for significance with our daily experience. Whether we accept or reject these representations of people and culture, they file themselves away in our subconscious and affect the opinions we form about what we do not know. As a second generation Puerto Rican, I have supplemented my familial knowledge with information I have learned about my culture in movies, on television, and in neighborhoods that are not my own. In this body of work, my reality contends with stereotypical fabrications for importance and meaning. This is a study of the way that identities are constructed. Is the real me present in these familiar representations, partially connected, or completely invisible?
