Jacquelyn Strycker

Artist Statement

The nature of a print is such that the marks one scratches with a needle, bites with acid, or gouges with a chisel are never actually seen. Instead, the art is the evidence of these marks, the residue of the gesture. Thus, the print is an illustration of the ephemeral, the transient. This sense of the temporary extends to my subject matter: natural systems and light -- the flight of a hummingbird, the luminosity of a leaf at dawn, the swell of a wave. I try to capture each of these ephemerals on the page.

Intrinsic to printmaking is repetition. As such, the matrix is created with the intent that it be printed multiple times. As I build layers on the plate and place print upon print, iterations begin to connect on all sides. By printing a plate over and over on a large sheet of paper, the bottom of one image blends into the top of another, recalling the melodic repetition of prayers or chants in which the end of one mantra becomes the beginning of the next and the myriad elements fuse to form a greater, boundless image.
