Owen Schuh  Artist Statement My work explores the possibility of constructing a world that mimics the chaos and contingency of nature based upon posited mathematical models and axioms. Through the physical manifestation of abstract algorithmic systems I investigate the relation between the ideal and the concrete. Though the systems may be deterministic, they are also completely conditioned by their physicality and mode of presentation. The physical materials, such as paint, or charcoal place constraints on the system while at the same time allowing for the manifestation of phenomenon unique to the interaction between the particular medium and system. The work also simultaneously reveals different notions of time, ranging from the smooth, to the digital, to the “timeless” notion of the a-priori. Each piece attempts to arrive at a unique configuration of these mathematical, formal, physical, and temporal elements. As such it posits the world not as a single fixed model, but rather as multiple contingent and fluid realities. Curriculum Vitae EDUCATION *2006 - April, 2007 M.F.A. Painting.
