Marco Phillips ![]() Artist Statement I make abstract paintings that emphasize color and gesture. I use fragments imprinted from my life experiences, sci-fi fantasy/ animation, abstract narratives and music. Something happens from the first line or color painted on the canvas that drove the process of creating on the surface. The impact of the paintings with mark making speaks more to me in terms of my interest in color, nature, music and space within space. I continue to make abstract paintings – one a day, sometimes two or three a day! My methods of marking the canvas/paper include using brushes, but also paper towels, cotton swabs, leaves, pieces of torn paper and the palette knife. Through this process I have discovered more ways to draw with paint. I use color intuitively. I lay down one color and it seems to call another color next to it. I try to finish a painting in one sitting no matter how many hours it takes to finish it. I deliberately choose a particular kind of music like hip-hop or jazz to influence the painting on that day. I expand this line of possibility through exploring with the brush and other tools to create paintings with an unsettling atmosphere.
