SARA JANE MURATORI  Artist Statement The artwork I make is personal yet not entirely autobiographical. It is exceedingly honest, and at times nearly debilitating in its self-consciousness. I am currently engaged in an effort to balance two parts of my artist-self. One part of me wants to reveal my innermost thoughts and desires through hand-written words and delicately scrawled pictures. The other part of me wants to encase my words and images in protective code. The content of my work varies but often includes anecdotes about my surroundings, short stories, prose, and social or political commentary. My current work, on paper and scratchboard, is a visual account of this balancing act. My marks, created by scratching into pre-inked surfaces, drawing with graphite, markers, colored pencil and embroidering, are either enhanced or obscured by applying layers of ink, gesso, glue, glitter, collaged prints, and paint. The result of these marks is a body of work that functions as a revelation of these two factions of myself.
