Walsh Hansen ![]() Artist Statement Empire Strikes Back is by far the best Star Wars film. People often say this is because it is the one with a sad ending. But I maintain that it is because, for one, it has a matter-of-fact plot line that basically exhibits a series of events and doesn’t make an attempt to resolve anything. Narrative information is simply presented, allowing the specifics of the film to hold its own weight, as the beginning and end of the story essentially exists in two other films. The implication of a history seems more important than the specifics of that history. It may feel important, however, when dealing with a personal history, to establish those specifics. If they are indeed less important, fabrications may be made. It is difficult to lie to oneself; therefore the fictional information must already be legitimate in some way. Fictions from film and television are existing narratives that can easily be injected into ones own memory. Similar to Robert Altman or Werner Herzog films of the 1970's, Empire Strikes Back provides us with moderately inconclusive information, a series of events. This information, which serves character development far more than a cause-and-effect plot line, could be easily applied to one's personal history in an effort to infill a lack of information.
