Artist Statement

TThroughout my life, many experiences have broadened my point of view and challenged my perspectives. From the trivial to the significant, each encounter has made an impact emotionally, physically or mentally. I often find myself conflicted, appreciating each situation from different viewpoints. My logical, analytical side wants to process and resolve the experience, while my creative, expressive side wants to memorialize it. This dichotomy of self has inspired me to create my current body of work.

In my series titled “Unfolding”, each piece exists in two different states, representing my own dichotomy. Each piece is a small sculptural object that unfolds into wearable art. In the process of unfolding the object, the viewer is also transformed, into the wearer. Each piece represents a two-part challenge. The first challenge was for me to envision different movements and mechanisms, to solve the physical transitions between the static forms to the final, wearable stage. The second challenge is for the viewer/wearer, to become physically involved with the object, to move beyond static viewing and to become a participant in my work. In some of my pieces the configurations are simple and it is easy for the participant to transition between states, quickly manipulating the sculpture into jewelry. In others, the two states are very dissimilar and it takes instruction and practice to move from one state to the other. The design challenges inherent in the mechanics of the transitions satisfies my analytical side, while the aesthetics of each piece satisfies the artist within me.
