Artist Statement

When I was 14, I moved with my family from the US to Japan. And one of the first things that caught my attention there was the height of the handle bars on the local trains. In the US, I had always been forced to find one of the few vertical poles to hold on to as the train moved, because I'm not nearly tall enough to reach the ones that hang above the seats. I had always dismissed the inconvenience as a natural consequence of being petite. But after the realization that I could actually grab hold of the horizontally mounted poles on all of the Japanese trains, I began to think more about issues of height and scale, about architectural standards and how they vary from place to place. I began to recognize, too, that though I remained constant, changes in my surroundings altered my perceptions of myself both in a physical sense and a psychological one.

Over the past several semesters I've explored different ways of converting my surroundings in an effort to reinvent my relationships with the people and things around me. These alterations are inherently unsustainable (and are thus primarily presented to the viewer in photographic form) and in many ways they are absurd and implausible proposals. Yet with each work, I believe there comes a moment when a genuine shift of some kind does occur.

Most recently I’ve returned to creating participatory installations. Comprised of square wooden risers arranged in a simple grid, my latest work allows viewers that same opportunity to challenge their spatial relationships to the architecture which houses them.
